Tow Hook Thread Size

Does anybody know what the tow hook thread size/pitch is? I'd like to make a mount for my GoPro HD video camera that screws into the tow hook threads in the bumper frame. I figure this would give me a rock-solid mount low to the ground taht doesn't require any permanent modification to the car body.

Why not just use the tow loop itself? Start with a couple of strips of perforated metal strap and add bolts, washers and wingnuts to clamp the eye between them, attach a low-profile tripod head to that with another screw through the middle and mount the camera on the head. Or use a bit of threaded rod in the standard tripod-mount size (1/4"-20 IIRC, but don't quote me) and another washer/wingnut setup to affix the camera directly to the strap clamp. Assemble the whole thing with some thin rubber sheeting or high-density foam in the right places to absorb a little shock and ensure good clamping.

Simple, secure and guaranteed to fit. For extra security, if the camera has a wrist strap you can tie that through the tow eye, in case the whole thing vibrates apart while filming your madcap adventures.

I think this sounds like a reasonable plan. Especially after I did some more research and found that BMW uses a propriatary size/thread pitch for their tow loop screw (M15.8xP3.175). I was hoping to have something in hand before I leave for my ED pickup, so maybe I'll visit my dealer and find out how much a spare tow loop costs.

It should be about $25-$30, tops. RealOEM.com shows the E46 part for ~$24 but strangely, doesn't have the E90 part. It's going to be similar if not identical though, so hardly a bank-breaker.
