Anybody heard of a bad ignition coil?
I've got a 2001 X5 with 90,000 miles on it. Drives like a freakin dream. I've owned it for about 9 months now and it's been great. In the last 3 months I've noticed a weird misfiring that's happening only between 40-50 kph, and the service engine soon light is now on. It was on and off for the last couple months. If I gun it off the line it's fine, if I drive really slow it's fine, but only when I drive normally it starts to have a shutter between 40 and 50 and then is suddenly gone when I'm above 55 or so. If I put it in manual mode it won't do it at all, only in auto mode. It idles perfect as well. Could this be a bad ignition coil? Any thoughts. Thanks

You mean spark plugs I hope.

I"ve replaced all the plugs, air filter, and oil change. I'm gonna do the fuel filter this weekend. I've heard coils are kind of common to BMW's but does this sound like it? Somebody suggested it to me that's why i ask. I"m not entirely sold on it.

If the check engine light came on you should have the codes checked before anything and that will point you in the right direction

could be an ignition coil as each spark plug has its own ignition coil, but as the above has said you need to have the codes read, this will tell you which coil is faulty.
I had to change one of mine a couple of months back. phil |

Bad coil packs were a common enough error on earlier X5 models and, as suggested, you should get a scan done to look for codes. There are troubleshooting posts (on xoutpost for sure) that list the details of how to diagnose the problem.

Hard to say as usual, but strange it only do it in auto but not manual transmission mode; I'd look at spark plugs, vanos sensor, MAF even battery (batter low trigger trans sluggishnes in BMW, that's why in manual mode you don't feel as bad). GL
