535i vs 550i realistic gas mileage

Seriously....how much better do you people think is a 535i in practice than the 550i in mileage?
I know its says 25mpg vs 30mpg++

I have been comparing my friend's 335i and my 550i and we are on the same page....
we both have i would say 50%city 50% highway..

my avg is 16.4 mpg and on the 335 i is almost 17.9...

my 328 said on the highway 28mpg but i never show the average more than 22mpg in practice even if I reset it many times.

So when I say practice, I don't mean driving like a paranoid being scared to hit the gas pedal.
but I also don't mean driving over 4K rpm either. (only rarely)

Ok you average 21.5mpg and then alex's 550i does 19.1...
thats not a serious difference I feel better now..
I guess my average is bad now because of the break in period...

the M3 that i test drove extensively averaged easy 19 so you know..my 14-16 mpg is really annoying at this moment.

That is VERY good mileage for a 550ix. My car has trouble breaking 16mpg with an average speed of 30.5mph (and I am light on the throttle). What is your average mph?

Most 550 MPG's that I have read here have been about 16 to 18 IIRC.

Oh man, I'm gonna miss my 325 which gets about 23mpg city and roughly 26mpg highway. I kinda figured I'd take a big mpg hit going up to the V8, though. Funny thing is one of the main reasons I didn't do the M3 was because of the horrendous gas mileage. On a side note, one of my friends called me the other day and said he was driving an M3 and it scared him because, "I do sh*t in this car that I wouldn't even do on my motorcycle." Hahaha -- I had the same feeling when I test drove the M3 - felt like I could overtake anything. At least in the 550 I may be more apprehensive because of the larger body size. MAYBE. 17MPG here I come.

A 535i will return about 3 mpg better than the 550i in average from what I see the 550 guys getting and what I was getting in the 535i.
The 550i seems to have very similar mpg as an M3.

535i. 19 MPG with almost 100% city driving. Goes up to mid-20's on any highway run, and on a long highway run, 30 MPG is very easily attained.

In NYC, I've ranged from about 14-16mpg. When I drive on road trips I get a great increase to 24-27 mpg. It's the stop and go traffic that affects the MPG.

535i: About 21mpg with about 50%/50%.

I just did a road trip from Bay Area to Los Angeles and back via highway 5 (including Pacheco Pass and the Grape Vine), going 65 at the low end, and 80 at the high end, and got 32mpg.

VA must be really flat...

can't see this for my area but today I reset the average on a one hour trip on the highway
I got 28mpg! (couldn't believe my eyes!)

then I reset again when back to the city for another hour (traffic+ stop and start) and I got a 14.4mpg.

I would like to see the 535i's report the same experiment and then we can compare.

xi models should only be compared to xi's

intuitively, I feel the 3mpg landmark that solstice mention shall be true.

If this is really true, it means one should consider seriously upgrading to a 550i when ordering.

the 535i maybe significantly better only on the highway

but the monthly average shall be on the 2-3mpg difference

Again, this is because you are south
its very flat down there...
I mean on junkyards, people will order car engines and parts from down there because
it is believed they have never been pushed as much as in New England...

No, VA is not flat. Not to mention, this mileage was on a trip in PA through the mountains. Decidedly not flat. If you keep the speed reasonable on the highway, 30 MPG is easily available.

I would advise you to avoid generalizations that are untrue. They do you no favors.

I lived in the NY metro area most of my life and spent significant time in New England. The driving conditions are not significantly different from any major metropolitan area. In fact, look up where DC ranks on the traffic areas:

1st - (tie) Chicago, Washington, D.C. 70 hours
3rd - Southern California 63 hours
4th - Houston 58 hours
5th - San Francisco-Oakland 49 hours
6th - (tie) Dallas-Fort Worth, Boston 48 hours
8th - Atlanta, Seattle 44 hours
10th - New York- Newark 42 hours

From the 2010 Urban Mobility Report published by Texas A&M University.

http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/01/20...worst-traffic/

Note that DC, which you apparently consider the "South" is tied for worst. In fact, if you consider Southern California "South", then 5 of the 10 cities are in the south.

Southern cars get picked from the junkyard because of a lack of salt to clear snow, not engine use.

I agree.

~2400 miles on my 550ix, maybe 70-30 city-highway, when I keep my tires inflated to 38F/39R as per the door sticker, 14mpg. I don't have the lightest foot and do shift down at times, it also varies with the temperature, possibly because of the AC, but that's the best I've been able to do.

I'm more upstate so I wouldn't classify it as flat but not straightup mountains either. I guess that's why they call it the Foothills. LOL

People from South Carolina on consider the following 'south'.......North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia (excluding metro ATL), sometimes Alabama and MS.

absolutely not true about the southern cars, I used to be in the business so don't even go there.
south is flatter period. And people buy them for this reason + the salt reason you mention.
Now what I see is that you have a 535i so thats ok for the 28-30 you reporting.
I thought you had a 550i and you had that mileage in the south.
