Anyone knows what are the actual effects of temperature on mpg?

(So far the only thing I have noticed among seasons on all cars is difference on the engine noise)

On the long highway my 550i did last time 28mpg and you are reporting 535i at 30mpg

on the city it is where the 550i is loosing at 14.7mpg in my case vs your 19MPG

hence Solstice's hypothesis of 3mpg diff seems to be true according to your data.

I'm assuming on this one but I would think the only thing that may affect the mpg during different seasons is whether the A/C is on or not. The ECM will modify the fuel mixture according whether the air is dense or not, so I don't think you would save anything on the more dense air in the winter. I could be wrong though.

Funny thing is one of the main reasons I didn't do the M3 was because of the horrendous gas mileage. On a side note, one of my friends called me the other day and said he was driving an M3 and it scared him because, "I do sh*t in this car that I wouldn't even do on my motorcycle." Hahaha -- I had the same feeling when I test drove the M3 - felt like I could overtake anything. At least in the 550 I may be more apprehensive because of the larger body size. MAYBE. 17MPG here I come.
And all the M3's I know have 19's...on highway/ city combo.

I am convinced that the 550 does pretty much M3 mileage in the city..if its highway only then 550 can do 28. But if you exit to go to dunkin for a few min, you will see a 22 on your screen
(after 1 hr's averaging!)
Now realistically, both my 328 and 550 can do NYC-Boston roundtrip with one full tank.
(but there i believe the tank is smaller on 328 by 3 gallons or so)

Effect of A/C on MPG on my car 535i GT is about 3 mpg or 10%. I finished a 9000 mile trip and when I was in cool weather -NW and Canada-I got approx 30 mpg over 2900 miles. When I hit hot weather coming back to Atlanta it immediately went down to 27mpg. At first I thought my tires were not inflated enough but realized it was 98 degrees outside.

This suggests good things about the effectiveness of the AC.

If my fuel economy is higher than 13-15 mpg I would feel I am not driving my 550i properly.

During a trip to Ohio I averaged 24mpg driving a conservative 65-75mph, but on a trip to NJ, driving quite aggressively, I only managed 18.5mpg. Overall my mileage has been dropping lately, but I having been letting the horses exercise a bit more freely.

I have had multiple long trips in my 535i xdrive and easily attain 32-34 MPG in highway cruising (mostly flat in the midwest) using cruise control most of the time. In my day to day driving which is about 50/50 city to highway I am getting 23.5-24.5. I am really very impressed with the highway mileage I have gotten in this car. My previous daily was an E90 328xi and I never got 30 MPG in that car on a trip. I would average around 22 in that car with my daily driving...I think the MPG is quite impressive given the cars for both the 550 and 535.

My 535xi is almost two months old. My best average for a tank was 31.6 which was 98% highway. My average with normal driving of 60-40 local-highway has been about the same as above...23.5-25. I have driven 500 miles since Friday which has included a ferry (long idles) and some stop and go but otherwise 80% highway, and am registering between 26 and 27.5 mpg.

My Audi 2.0t Quattro A4 averaged 25 mixed and got as high as 33 on the highway...so I find my 535 to be quite good by comparison.

So this is great info..
So far my belief is that on the highway 535 and 550 have insignificant differences
but in the city 550 gets thirsty... the same with an M3 to maybe even more ...

Just took a drive to Atlanta Saturday night (about a 2.5 hr drive). Cruise control was set on 78mph and I got 28.0mpg. A small amount of midtown driving/idling and by the time I got back it had dropped to 27.0.

I'm now averaging 32mpg (UK Gallons - which converts to 26mpg US) after the running in (break in) period, in my 535i F11 in mixed conditions 50/50 town/motorway.

Of course it's possible that we might get better mpg here because being a small island our miles seem shorter. Or perhaps because we drive on the right.

This whole discussion understates how much driving style affects MPG. For instance someone above stated that the M3 gets 19mpg combined city/hwy. When I had my E46 M3 (which was the more efficient M3), I never got more than 15mpg even though most people claimed it did 20mpg combine city/hwy. Because most of the time I was driving flat-out.

That said, I don't think anyone who cares about mpgs should be buying a 550i. If you have to feather the pedal to get good mpgs, what's the point in having 400hp.

It depends how you drive the M3 of course.
And I can't imagine driving it with light feet anyway.
If you are on a long trip though its nice to know you can do that.

Well...I knew you gone speak up anyway
I have noticed you have (and my self too) post more than once the famous saying 'if you care about miles you shouldn't look at this car ' bla bla..

But this is not the issue at stake on this thread. It is about 535i vs 550i mpg.

This is different than looking at plain mpg's in 550i or M3.

My primary motivation for posting here is because after test-drive I suspect the 535i

as an engine it self needs to be 'pushed' to make the car's body behave well.

and will therefore be consuming similar mpg's with the 550i....

So we are comparing efficiency between the two engines.
The difference in budget is relatively negligent comparing to my 328 , (20% extra gas monthly is not that of a big deal comparing to other things)

Now even when the gas will hit 8mpg within the next few yrs and assuming you will be able to afford it, or at least be happy paying for it,
then it will not necessarily be only about how much gas you can afford

but it will be about how "politically incorrect" you are when you drive gas guzzlers

How 'sustainable' is your toy etc....

I already get lots of criticism from colleagues ( yes...am in bostonia...)

While these people are annoying, in principle I don't give a damn at what the say

because they don't know what they are saying this can be a long conversation

But overall this is why I think its good to talk about and comparing mpg's.

FWIW, 16.6 MPG during my ED, with a lot of "spirited" miles. (Calculation is based on the odometer reading at my last fill-up in Europe, summing up all the litres of fuel I put in during the trip, converting that to gallons.)

I have 2011 535i.

I live in NYC and I have mostly used it for grocery shopping to NJ or downtown NYC. I get 16 mpg in NYC and was getting 29-30.5 doing 80 mph on highway (upstate NYC/I80 in PA all hilly terrain).

my wife has 12,000 on her 550xi. getting 21.5mpg. Mostly city. I was watching her tach the other day and she granny drives it. Most shifts occur at about 2200 rpms. She has no need to romp the throttle. Car gets 25 to 26 at 75 to 80 mph. On county highways at 60 it has hit 28mpg. Much better than I ever expected from an AWD 4500 lbs car, I credit the 8 speed slush box and a light size 6 foot. I would not get her milage.
