New M5 will come in all wheel drive and with a I6 Tiriple Turbo Diesel
![]() As our oil burning 'd' badged fellow BMW enthusiasts have been telling us for several years, diesel is coming to the US in a big way. To put an end to any doubt about the future of diesel, BMW M is jumping in a big way with a I6, triple turbo diesel powered BMW M5. As typical with oil burners the diesel won't make as much horse power as a gas engine but will have plenty of kick off the line with monster torque (typically a weak spot for high reeving M engines). Given the choice between two M5s, one a v8 twinpower turbo engine with more horse power or a I6 triple turbo diesel with less horsepower but more torque, which would you choose and why? Follow our full F10 M5 coverage at http://www.bimmerfest.com/tag/M5 |

If this is true...I'd be all for the diesel. Yes, from the purist standpoint the petrol engine is more in line with M's heritage but good God man...the performance that you'll be able to extract from a car like this is insane. Couple that with the added benefit of trundling around town you'll probably get close to 30-35mpg and I'd say that this should sell just as well, if not better than the petrol M5. Plus no one would expect a diesel sedan to run low 4-sec to 60 and in typical BMW fashion I'd wholly expect the hp/torque to be slightly (20-30hp/20-30ft-lbs) underated. Now if they'd only bring the smaller diesels (2.0d) over...

NA is not ready for the smaller diesels, so BMW is not bringiing them. In time they will come. For now we need to take whatever we can get.

Im Glad its coming but price will be an issue I for one wont be iterested I just bought a 335d and love it. People stare at me when I go to the DIESEL pump down here in Puerto Rico and I then tell them its a DIESEl and they say REALLY I didnt know BMW made those and then the fun begins.

wow, xdrive triple turbo diesel m5 with 650 ft lbs of face ripping torque :o When top gear tested the 535d vs 545i e60's the 535d was right on its tail the whole time, with less displacement.

That reporter got some of his facts wrong
the 550d engine is a 3 litre triple turbo engine producing (possibly) 650Nm = 480 lbs/ft torque. The 5 series will be a 550d possible to buy it with a M pack on it. That does not make it an M5 It is also priced quite a chunk below the M5, and yes will be available as a X-drive The M5 Gas Engine as you say develops 560 BHP and and I thought around 600 lbs/ft torque. Do you really think that BMW are about to undermine their flag ship with a diesel ? Still, the 50d will be a very nice car I'm sure (I would like one Santa)

It does sound more like a 550d than an M5d. The "M5 diesel" headline is catchy, but that doesn't sound like what they are doing if the car is called the 550dM/X.
If this option was available right now, I'd do my part to popularize diesel in the US by changing my 550xi order to a 550dx(M). That said, I can't wait that long. Maybe next time around. |

Go to the BMW UK site and it can be ordered there - "F10 535d M Sport Saloon". Not an M. but an M Sport.
I personally like the "F11 535d M Sport Touring". There's a diesel I'd buy - and then add a Burger tune... ![]() I've got an 2008 E61 with Dinan S2 that I'll be keeping for a while...
