98 factory keyless
Were all 98s pre-wired for the factory keyless? I have the build sheet for my car and whoever bought this originally checked off every option except for keyless entry.

All E36s were pre-wired for alarm and keyless. That doesn't mean they have the control units, though. Only time you would have the actual control unit would be if that option was selected.

All U.S. E36s were pre-wired for a dealer-installed, Alpine alarm system.
The U.S. BMW/Alpine alarm system is different from the factory-installed systems which BMW NA didn't order on their cars. On a '98 the factory alarm was part of the ZKE. A car that received or could have received a factory-installed system will not have the pre-wiring because the factory didn't need it. Last edited by johnf; 08-22-2011 at 11:14 AM. |

My US E36 is a '98, claims to be pre-wired (as indicated in the trunk), and has the OEM factory installed alarm system/keyless entry. Doesn't this contradict your last sentence, John?

Are you sure the alarm was installed at the factory? If I remember correctly it would have been option 302.

I guess it could have been dealer installed, but I always assumed it was from the factory.

It was dealer installed if the car has the 12 pin alarm connector, X13025, behind the glove box. That connector and wiring would have been a superfluous and interfered with the remote control wiring.

It has the connector which I believe you're referring to, and the alarm brain behind the glove box. You can see it resting on the floorboard in this photo I took when I replaced my cabin microfilter.

From what I can see, that looks like the dealer installed alarm.
Wow. Was all that in your microfilter?! |

That was about 35% of what I vacuumed out of the microfilter housing. Needless to say, my car could barely defog the windows before I changed the filter.

Mine does not have the sticker in the trunk that says pre-wired for alarm. I guess it could have fallen off or something.

I got under the glove box today. I have the plug in module but no remotes. Where might I buy the remote that will work without paying an arm, leg, and my future firstborn? I did not see any on ebay.
