Portable Nav Pro Kit

Looking for answers...in order to mount/use the garmin nuvi 3790 as pictured on BMW website I'm told I have to buy the entire portable nav pro kit which includes a garmin gps (lower model than the 3790) and the mounting brackets which are not part of the separately sold installation kit. Can anyone verify that or have any ideas. I just want the gps mounted/powered and have a clean appearance with no exposed wiring.
thanks,

I will have portable GPS installed on my Z4 tomorrow at the dealer. My car has pre-wired for it. So, I assumed there is no expsed wire, except perhaps the power cable behind the GPS. i will let you know tomorrow. When my arrived last week, the dealer did not have a GPS and had to order.

I got a BMW Garmin portable GPS installed at my BMW dealership.

The wires do not exposed. They are insde of the swivel pillar. This was good.
However, the original dashboard box which would have a built-in GPS was replaced with a shallow tray. The swivel pillar is at the center of the tray. It is quite ugly, and I am very dissapointed. Such a nice looking interior became unsightly.

Also, the GPS holder is always visible, which defeat the having a portable. Break in often occurs the car with a sign of portable GPS.

One of The reasons I did not order the built-in GPS was its pop-up poition during normal driving which GPS is not used. Now, the portable one is more unshgtly than the built in. The other reason was I like Germin.

Let me post some ugly photos later.

The pop-up display can be retracted anytime, whether the GPS or any other of it's functions are in use or not.

Thanks for correcting me, Z4golfer. Dahn! I wish I had the correct information before ording it.

Many troubles that I had during ordering a Z4 were associated with a lack of demos at the dealership. I did not see any Z4 35is until I got one. I made a test drive was (I think) a 2010 Z4 3.0i with manual trans.

Unhappy

Here are photos of portable GPS (Garmin Nuvi 3790 Nav Portable Pro) on my Z4. It is functional such as "radio volume goes down when Nav voice comes on" and "GPS voice off when phone rings" But, it has a bad design feature that the GPS mount stays up when it is not used.

I asked the BMW service to modify it. So that the mount will be hidden inside the original GPS box. It will cost a few hours of labor time. If I knew this, I would have ordered the car with a built-in GPS>

Portabe GPS mounting

The dealership mechanic modified the GPS mount fr me, and the GPS mount/holdr can be stored inside of the original empty dashboard GPS box when the portable GPS is not in use.

He drilled a small hole at the back of the box, and the wires go through the hole. He extended the wires.

When the GPS is in use, the GPS holder is secured by velclo tape at the top and bottom of the GPS, the velclo are attached to the lower and upper lips of the box in open box position.

The cost of this work was not cheap, $460. He told me that removal and installation of the dashboard box was very time consuming (up to 4 hours).

But, it is better than broken window...... Peace in mind for parking. Next time, I will order the built-in GPS

Why people buy GPS gizmos when their phones already have excellent, free sat nav, with most up to date maps Google Nav, Waze etc.

Unless they're still tolling around with a flip phone
