Odd noise when cranking

i have a 86 535 e28 intermittently makes a metallic clanging noise when cranking usually during cold start, would appreciate any assistance/ suggestions

Are they engine noises? From the starter or flywheel? Is it an automatic or manual trans? Noise diagnosis can be very tough. You need to try to eliminate some areas and items to narrow down the possibilities. Visually inspecting under the hood and under the car while someone is cranking the engine might help.
