7 Series - E65 / E66 (2002 - 2008)
Discussion of BMW's 4th generation E65/E66 7 Series flagship. The E65 generated much controversy, due to its radical styling and iDrive user difficulties. Nonetheless, the E65 broke records to become the best-selling 7-series iteration ever, especially after its 2005 facelift.

Rebuilt Alternator

Hey guys,

Been chasing several gremlins on the 04 E65. Slowly getting the time to resolve each one as they pop up.

My latest issue is possible alternator replacement. New battery about 6 months ago. Car was down for most of that time. Battery was placed on a trickle charger to keep voltage levels up. Once up and running found that I could drive the car about 30 miles let sit for 4 hours, drive to get lunch then let sit for about 3.5 hours before driving 30 miles home. During the drive home I would get the radio cutting in and out and a message stating trans shift to P when engine is turned off. The following day the car would be dead .

Removed battery and had load tested. Battery test good just under charged. Recharged then drove car to work and back. Same issue on the way home and next day would not start.

I will check alternator voltage output this weekend. In the mean time has anyone had similar experiences with the alternator not providing the voltage to charge battery as you drive, but proves enough to keep car running and go to 1st level of load shedding? Last who do you recommend for rebuilding in So Cal area/Orange County?

Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the lead.

Did you happen to test out your alt before replacing? If so, what did you see with your readings.

I didn't test it. When I turned it by hand I could tell that it was not smooth. I should've tested it first but I was impatient so I just bought a new one.
