E39 (1997 - 2003)
The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki

My car won't start

Hey my 03 530i won't start. The car battery seems to not hold the charge. I jumped the battery and left it overnight next morning it didn't start but the dash lights came on. I bought a new battery thinking that was the problem but it's not. I don't know what else it could be. I tested the alternator and that's not the problem.

Hi Avila,

What voltage was the new battery when you first tried to start it?
Then what did it drop to in the morning?
Does it have any aftermarket electrics (eg stereo or alarm)
Has any work been done to the car recently? Or any other problems?

First, did you buy the right battery? 49 series? Did you make sure that the battery you bought was fully charged?

How did you test the alternator if the car didn't start? Assuming that you jump started your car, how did you test? What voltage were you getting?

When you say clicks, do you mean cranks, or literally clicks. If it cranks and doesn't start, is your security light on while you crank?

Have you scanned the car for codes?

hi avila..youll need a little bit of test equipment here, mainly a voltmeter, cheap enough. first off, charge the battery overnight, then read the voltage. it should be 12.5+. after starting the car, with it running, read the voltage at 1500 rpm or so, it should be 14v thereabouts. when sitting overnight, does the battery voltage drop? with the headlights turned on, engine off, does the battery voltage drop much? that kinda covers battery, charging and parasitic drain probs, but your description of the problem doesnt give much to go by.
99 528i 5sp sport, vanos rebuild,coolingoverhaul,stripped/repainted/polished/recoated OEM BBS style 5 wheels, new paint , all int/ext LED's clear corners, all vac leaks fixed, eonon 5166, ECS short shifter, LED ae's and fog lights (clear), all brakes, fixed trifecta, rear control arm camber repair, new throttle body, ccv delete, but it ended up as a huge vac leak, returned to new stock ccv, new injectors, cloned and replaced dme.
