Ideal Subwoofer

Hey Guys -

Dunno if this question has been answered already - but I am thinking about putting in a small sub into the trunk of my e60 - I don't want anything too crazy or too loud. I definitely don't want it to rattle and sound terrible and ghetto (you guys know what I'm talking about). I just want a little bump with crisp sound.

The sound in the car sounds amazing and I am quite impressed with it and definitely don't think that any of the speakers or anything needs to be replaced...just need that extra bass.

Any suggestions?

One thing I can say to you is be careful with adding bass... Because if you have the premium logic 7 sound system and play it loud enough you can already hear that rattle a bit from outside which I'm not a big fan of either..

I got a JL audio 12 inch that sounds clean and I added a gain switch where I can turn the bass up or down. The sub is actually a stealthbox made for the E60 if you dont have the logic 7 system. Here is the link to the one I got http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_s...hp?fit_id=1577 It was expensive but you can probably find one on ebay cheaper...One more thing the bass will rattle your license plate but a piece of Dynomat behind the plate takes care of that

Thats why I said you can find it cheaper on ebay. Plus I have always known JL audio to be expensive speakers... I like it and the amp I bought with it is small and sits in the back of the trunk. To me it was worth it.

Just put together something simple. I will advise you to get at least a 12" sub woofer though. Our cars were apparently built for war and dont allow too much bass into the car. Some people prefer a sealed box, but I went with a ported box with a Directed 12" sub + kicker amp. Its a really simple install because everything you need to tap into is in the trunk. You can go with the Dynamat behing the tag or go with the cheaper option of some "peel & stick" roofing insulation. That solved my problem...

Truly. I tried a JL sealed 2x10 in my trunk for a while and eventually went back to the underseat subs. I had to have the sub so loud in the trunk before I could really hear it in the car that I felt like I was entertaining my cohorts at the stopllight as much as myself.

I'm running 2x 12's in the trunk now and couldn't be happier. I love the way it can handle any low end frequency effortlessly.
FYI, sealed enclosure, speakers facing rear of the trunk.

I think 1 - 12 will be more than enough for me - with already having a good system in the car. I think I have Logic 7 - how can I make sure?

Yes, sound is always subject to the person listening.

"I THINK" Logic7 can be found out if you have a EQ adjustabilities under "Tone" settings and if you have an option for turning the surround on or off.

You would also have the Logic 7 dsp setting under the Tone as well

Look for speakers in your rear doors. If they are there, you have Logic. If they aren't, you don't.

Is it harder to modify the sound system with the Logic 7 system?

Have you or anyone you know added a port in to the rear deck or behind the rear armrest to allow bass into the interior? I would love to know if this makes a difference before I do it.

No, but I did drive around with one of the rear seats down for a while. It absolutely made a difference.

Well my back seats don't fold down so my only option is to port the trunk somewhere.

I have read about people cutting a hole where the ski port should be if your car doesn't have it. Considering doing this myself...here is the link

I found a great deal on a used Polk Audio DXi 112 sub, so I decided to try it out. It's a 1x12 ported 2-ohm sub cabinet. I thought it might work well since I could sit it right in the center of the trunk firing forward through the ski pass-through. Somehow it didn't occur to me to use the ski pass-through as a port when I had the JL Audio 2x10 a couple years ago.

I installed it yesterday, and it sounds fantastic so far. It goes much deeper than the Earthquake SWS-8 subs under my seats go, certainly due to the larger box area. I've made no crossover adjustments compared to the Earthquake subs I also have in there (which are not in use at the same time as the new sub), but might not need to.

This looks like it might be a very cost effective solution; this subwoofer cost me less than $100, delivered to my door.
