cleaning evaporator

does anyone know if it is possible to clean the evaporator in 2001 e39 540i, without removing the unit from the dash. i have been having an air quality issue with my car. today i was told i may have a dog hair problem. the PO was a smoker and had a dog (i did not know this at purchase). i do not handle dog hair very well! i like this car, but i will not be able to keep it under these conditions. any help would be appreciated.

I don't know the answer to your question, but have you replaced the cabin filters?

I have used Einszett 961105 Klima Cleaner with pretty good results. You snake the tube down the center console vent & unload the can into the evaporator. It is a foaming cleanser/deodorizer that seems to be pretty good at destinkifying. One word of caution, however: As I recall, the instructions say to leave the cleaner in for 15 minutes before starting the car & turning on the blower. I would recommend more like a half an hour & do not turn the blower on full. The first time I used it, I wound up blowing the liquid up into the center console vent where it dribbled down into the MID and temporarily shorted it out. It took about 2 weeks before it started working again. If you use the lower blower settings, the condesate will flush the cleaner out the drain tubes & everything is good.

I have cut a hole into the housing near the throttle pedal and made the tool to spray the evaporator. I open it up and spray it down about every three months or so. The odor problem is very common.
