E39 (1997 - 2003)

Traction control light stays on

Today I changed the center steering link and after went for a drive and light went on. Now it stays on? Any advise would be helpful.

Is the car pulling lef tor right when you drive straight? If so get the front end aligned.

My only guess.

You need INPA or DIS/GT1 or something to read the BMW specific error codes for that. An OBDII code reader is of no help here. But with the proper scan tool, it will direct you right to the source. I suspect it is unrelated to anything you did...probably just a coincidence.

Example: I got a "service engine soon" light simultaneously with the DSC light coming on. Took it to the dealer and I had two unrelated things happen at the same time....aux cooling fan failed and steering angle sensor failed. And my OBDII code reader was of absolutely no help in diagnosing the issue. It read out two unrelated codes for throttle position sensor...and they ended up being fine according to the dealer. They replaced the fan and sensor and no issues fourteen months later...

Did you change the tie rod ends also? You've probably changed the alignment which affects the straight-ahead-position of the steering wheel. This upsets the steering angle sensor adjustment. Consider getting an alignment. If error still exists, you may need to calibrate with INPA, DIS or Rheingold.

This sounds silly, but any chance someone was in the car and bumped the button during the repair time? I think when traction control is turned off the warning is always on.

Light is on correct but if I hit button and nothing happens, I did remove old tie rod ends to install into new steering link. I am taking car tomorrow for a front end alignment see what happens.

Did you turn the car to the on position during the repair? If you did you might have to re calibrate the steering wheel sensor.
