Anyone know about a 1986 735I? I'm taking a test drive...

Hello!

I'm looking to buy my first BMW. I lots of different models but the years 1981-1991 are my faves. My budget is $2000 and so far its been hard to find anything that seems reliable. I was going to test drive this 86 735 i auto, 180k...any thoughts? I need a daily driver but I love the style of these old Bimmers...any help would be much appreciated!

From what I've been seeing, price seems based on a car in really good condition - you need to see it and drive it to really tell. Take a good look under the hood for cleanliness. Listen for the valve tappet noise when motor is hot.

Check service records. Likely won't find any. With those miles if not already done, you might consider new betls, hoses, fluids, filters (don't forget the differential).

I would be concerned as a daily driver about the water pump, alternator, starter, fuel pump, injectors, engine electronics, battery, etc.

This is a very old car with a lot of miles. I am not sure I would recommend this as your first Bimmer.

I would say it's the most reliable bimmer. I had it 15 yrs ago or so.
Very simple, powerful enough, comfortable, cheap to maintain.
M30 engine runs forever.
Tranny with 180 miles does not sound very cool, but who knows may be they changes oil?
For 2000$ you can get e32 body which is much better but a liitle bit more complex.
