E60 (2004 - 2010)
BMW 5-Series (E60 chassis) was first seen in the Unites States in the fall of 2003 with a 2004 Model Year designation. The E60 is now available as a 528i, 528xi, 535i, 535xi, 550i and a 535xi sports wagon! -- View the E60 Wiki |

Standard Audio Issues
Hi all- I purchased an '08 535XI and realized my front right speakers sounded blown. I upgraded to the BSW tweeter/midrange speakers and they still sound blown. My thought is that the amp is in the process of or has failed. I can purchase a used Harman Becker amp from ebay for $120 bucks.
Does this sound like an amp failure? Does this sound like the best fix? How hard is it to swap these amps out? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help Last edited by mtheeb; 03-06-2013 at 12:17 PM. |

Sounds like an amp or wiring problem to me, replacing the amp should be pretty easy, I don;t recall if it requires coding to make it work. If it doesn't it should be plug and play.

Thank you for the response. So if I replace with the same unit (I'm assuming the Harman Becker) would I still need to recode?

Maybe, with our cars almost all the modules are coded specifically to the VIN of the car it is in. So you may have to recode the amp to your car for it to work. Shouldn't be a problem though, a competent indy shop should be able to do it in minutes for less than $100.

Can anyone confirm what Pjinca is saying? I feel comfortable switching the amps out but is there some sort of pairing procedure needed?

Your iDrive unit may or may not be powering that front speaker. |

Thanks for the reply,
It is the standard sound system. Not the L7. |

The iDrive unit -not the HiFi OEM amp (which powers only the underseat woofers)- powers the front speakers.

Yikes, what is the repair procedure for that, is it normal for a channel to start sounding scratchy? It's definately intermittent. Is it a DYI type project? Cost?

Check the connector at the back of the iDrive unit or at the speaker in question.

Thanks Technic I'll do that tonight. I replaced both the twitter and the midrange in the door already, so I know it's not the speakers. Is there a DYI to pop that Idrive unit out to check that connection?
Again, I appreciate the help here. |

Does anyone have a link to removal of the ASK unit to check the connections in a 2008 E60 (with nav). I cringe to tear my dash apart.
