Clutch switch??

1997 328i, Having a hard time starting the car at times with clutch in. Was told its probably the clutch switch? You cannot start this car unless you depress the clutch. Is it the clutch switch and are they hard to put in. Once I move the stick around and depress the clutch it starts its very erratic? But does start.

If the car tries to start at all, then it's not the clutch switch. Clutch switch keeps the ignition switch from doing ANYTHING.

What do you mean starts erratic?

Once I wasn't thinking and turned on my car with out putting the clutch in. Actually, accidental did that on both my e36's.. It started.. Just took a fraction of a second longer to turn over..

My buddies f-350 has it and you have to stomp the pedal as you turn the key in the ignition, pretty funny to watch

I believe its the OBD-II models that have it, both my 96 and 97 have it but 93 didnt.

Yep, it's OBDII only.......

When I bought my E36, the owner had left it in his driveway and in 1st. I guess he usually parked out of gear in his garage. Anyway, he reached in and turned the key over, and it took off. He had to dive back in to get the clutch and e-brake. Came about 6" from his garage door.......

We had some fun with that one.....he was quite embarrassed.

clutch switch?

Alright, first time on here. Let's see you anyone can help. I have a 97 318ti, one day when I was turning off my car, it won't turn off on me; had to stall the clutch and now it won't turn back on. I switched out the starter and the ignition switch, as I was taking out the switch, I saw that the ignition lock cylinder housing was NOT moving as I turned the key off/on. So I got some pliers and played around with it, the spade at the back of the housing shot right back in. Now the spade shoots out but to turn it off I need to take the key out and put it back in and turn it off. Here's the problem, as I turn the key on, thinking( I fixed the problem) it WONT start. The lights work, the radio is on , the starter even kicks over put the car won't start. What could the problem be?

Your production model must be before June 96. If it is after, your car was built by accident without the clutch safety switch.
