Auto Folding Side Mirrors?

I can folder the side mirrors manually by pressing the button but I cannot see anything in the iDrive to make the mirrors fold in and out automatically, as you lock or unlock the car. Am I missing something or can this function be set by the dealer somehow?

The key fob can be programmed by the dealer. Basically, after closing the door, if you keep pressing the "close" button on your key fob, both mirrors will fold in. When you touch the handle to open the door, or press the "open" button on your key fob, both mirrors will swing out. Remember to tell the dealer to enable this feature for all keys. Some lazy tech will just do this for the first active key.

Thanks that is great to know, I am going to request that the dealer enables it.

I asked the dealer today to enable the auto-folding mirror function and after a bit of research they can back saying that BMW withdrew this feature in 2006 and cars after this cannot be enabled for this function.

hd750Li, can you confirm that you have had this enabled on an F01?

Thanks

Ha...ha...Your dealer was bs with you! I have both 2008 and 2011 Li. They both have the same feature enabled. Note that this is not a standardized feature. Not every dealer knows how to program this thing. Tell your dealer to look at TM modules option KOMFORTSCHL. I can post a video clip....whenever I get home...in a couple days. Read post #8 here http://wap.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=546739

Actually, you're lucky because the key fob in European cars has more programming options than the US one.

Thanks, you are quite right, more persistence required on my part it appears. Spoke to a different dealer and they said it could be enabled, I took the car in, I am not sure if they actually did anything or not in the end as the implication was that it was enabled by default.

Anyway, to fold the mirrors, one press of the lock button (the BMW decal) and hold (about 1 second) until the mirrors fold in, it is a thing of great beauty (little things and all that)! To unfold just unlock as usual and they unfold as the car is unlocked.

So F01 owners, press and hold and see if it works, you will love it.

So what is "KOMFORTSCHL" and how come you know so much about the internal workings of BMW do you work for BMW or something? If you have any more information on the hidden settings I would love to read up on them, thanks by the way, much appreciated.

You're very welcome! I'm just a weekend warrior who loves to tinker around with binary stuffs.

BTW, you can close the trunk by the same trick. If it cannot be closed by "default" then go back and yell at your dealer again! Further speaking about the trunk, that button that you use to open the trunk (in the driver footwell), can also be used to close the trunk too. One press to open, another press to close it. My guess is your dealer will hear a lot of yelling.....

Post a video or something....Cheers!

So that was going to be my next question actually...

Is there a way to make the boot lid open when the car is locked? I have tried pressing the boot button on the fob, double pressing, pressing and
holding but nothing, the only way I can open the boot is by unlocking the car first and then using the boot release button on the fob.

I dont have the powered boot close option on my car as you suggest so I have to close it by hand but it would be good to open it to get my coat out instead of the whole car. Thanks.

Actually, it's not "another press to close it." I wish that was the case. If fact, you have to keep the press held UNTIL the trunk is completely closed. Otherwise, the trunk will suspend at what ever position it was in when you stopped pressing. I'm sure it's supposed to be some kind of safety feature, still for a high tech car as this, it should sense if there is an obstacle and "fail safe" open.

Are we 100% sure United States dealers have the capability to perform this change?

I asked two dealers when my car was new, as well as BMW NA customer relations, all of which said the features are not available in the United States due to safety concerns. Same goes for retrofitting rear of fog lamps - the wiring is there, but even if the European switch plate and bulbs were installed, the programing of the car does not allow it. But someone please advise if you are able to get this functionality in the US, and what your R.O. states w/r/t same!

Otherwise, if possible, I hope the programing is somehow that if the mirrors are folded upon leaving the car, they do not automatically unfold upon the mere unlocking of the car, as they might get damaged if the car was parked in a way that required the mirrors to be folded in the first place.

No I don't think you can do program this, when you unlock the car the mirror unfold. If you park in a tight spot then you will need to fold the mirrors using the button on the drivers door, then to unfold you have to press the same button again.

Got it! That makes more sense; if you use the button on the inside of the car by the window controls, only that can unfold the mirrors, not the key fob.

I am not sure it needs to be programmed as I have a had a few other 7s, 6s and M5 over the last 4 months and they all have this feature enabled so I expect it is enabled by default (at least in the UK).

I went to the dealer that Ii bought my car from and they said they could not do this. The service manager said he called a couple other dealers and none had done this. Does anyone in New Jersey know what dealer could get this done?? Im annoyed at my dealer looking at me as if I was crazy and had three eye balls!

I'm sure it's possible; just have to have the attention of the right person for the job!

I don't know who else to speak to. Next time I take the car for service I'll ask them again and if they refuse, I'll just have to refuse to put good answer of the survey I always fill out.

I am told this is not a function that is legal in the states - has anyone had success on getting a dealer to do this for them?

My Range Rover has this feature. I've also seen Mercs and Lexus with auto folding mirrors.

I actually prefer to not have the mirrors fold automatically. I like having the option to fold the mirrors when I need to and thankfully, the mirrors do unfold automatically once you hit 25mph if you forget to open them. If I manually fold the mirrors in the Range, they don't unfold automatically so it's a good feature for the 7.

+1.

I think this feature is mainly useful in Europe and Asia where parking spots are extremely tight. Perhaps NYC? And in that case, just hit the button. But out here in TX, if a large SUV can park without folding their mirrors, I'm not sure I would need it on my 7er. If a spot is too tight, I usually just find a wider one.

Coding

The auto folding mirrors is a coding application, that is just one of the many options that can be done to make your car customized to your preferences. I have a 08 X5 and I just had mine coded to open and close windows and mirrors from the FOB and comfort access, I also disabled the stupid iDrive disclaimer, and a bunch of other things. I would recommend having coding done by someone else other than BMW if you want the disclaimer to be removed, also the dealer sometimes charges several $100 for coding, which is a rip off.

My dealer doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about. I wouldn't know where to look to get this done. Why have these programs availalbe and not allow us to change them? Merecedes and countless others, inlcuding Ford Pick-ups, have auto folding mirrors. The mystery of logic continues to perplex me...

Yes a surprising number of dealers don't seem to know anything about coding and also a lot of indie shops are somehow confused about coding. I would think if your in business of working on BMW's and your an indie shop, part of your business model would be understand most aftermarket systems with the vehicles you service. Also as to why the iDrive doesn't let you control these options seems stupid, who working at BMW thinks that people don't want to access this part of their car.
