2010+ M Sport Package Trim
Does anyone know what the blacked-out chrome trim on the front and rear bumpers is called? Is there a special name to the effect? I don't believe it's "shadowline", is it? The shadowline trim around the greenhouse looks a little different. And, is there any way to replicate the effect on parts that are chromed, without the part just looking "black" (i.e.: on the chrome trim above the front air dam on a non-Sport Package vehicle)? Thanks!

Meant to say 2011+ M Sport Package Trim (2010 had chrome).

Great questions. I have M Sports and want to black out rear chrome trunk strip and front grill. Vorsteiner shows it done right on their website (vorsteiner.com package VR7), but the don't offer the trim kit, just spoilers, etal. I have emailed them to find out how they had the chrome "shadow lined". As to the blacked out chrome reference, it looks like the same material as "shadow line" on my M, but I it could be slightly different....I know what you are seeing/asking. Was also told European Auto Source does a "shadow line" treatment to the chrome....waiting to hear back from them as well.
BMW certainly does not offer "shadow line" treatment to the rear trunk lid and front kidneys, per a couple calls to my dealer. Let's hope somebody comes up with something. I will update you on what I find and hope you will do same. Karl |

Thanks for being on the same page as me Karl, and for the info; do keep us up-to-date with you findings.
Otherwise, look at the photos below. It seems as though BMW Individual added the "shadowline" effect to the chrome parts on the white Steinway & Sons edition model they just unveiled! Last edited by dbs600; 11-27-2010 at 08:20 AM. |

my eyes must suck. to me it looks like chrome or black chrome on the kidneys. I believe the left the trunk strip as chrome with a gaudy "Steinway and Sons" tag.
I do have the Steinway piano black (vs. woodgrain) interior and it is nice. silver piano wire inlay looks good with aluminum highlights. hopefully I will find out more this week other than "pull it off, sand it and paint it". I just looked at the car and I'm not even sure how to get the trunk strip off, let alone pull apart the grille. I'll let you know what I find. regards....Karl |

Yes, what I am refering to is the effect that the 2011+ M Sport Package models have on the areas I've circled, which are also on the front; the 2010 M Sport Package models had silver / chrome, the 2011's have black / shadowline. Otherwise, I would like to know if I can get the effect of the 2011's on the area of the non-M Sport Package model I've circled; not to simply paint it black, but to have that 'shadowline' or 'black pearl' effect.

here's a picture of the front of my 2011. I hear what you are saying.....the black parts were chrome in 2009 and 2010. Frankly, it is a small piece of plastic that you can probably buy through bmw, assuming the aero kit stayed the same. looks replaceable through bmw to me.......

No, one can have the Piano Black Finish Wood Trim on a non-Individual vehicle for an upcharge of $1,080 MSRP, M Sport Package or not; and, strange enough, one can have an Individual vehicle without the Individual paint; but, in reality, you can have anything you want, just be prepared to pay for it, and, sometimes(!), you get 'priced-out' with pricing that can in NO WAY be justified, instead of BMW just saying "no"; trust me, I've experienced same firsthand.

dbs is right for sure. I have piano black wood (with piano wire inlay) in a brand new M sport. It took an extra couple weeks (parts shortage), but i like it. karl

Just got back from the dealer and it seems we're now able to select between "Chrome" and "Dark Chrome" for the 2013 M Sport Package!
