Fuel Injector Service

Recently, I have been having issues between 20-40mph with the car acting sluggish. Took it in and the dealer did an injector cleaning and this seems to have cleared it up. Does anyone know what this service entails and if it something that can be done in my garage? It's not covered under the maintenance plan and was $150..if it is as easy as dumping a bottle of some cleaner in there I would like to do it myself...

Anyone know what this service entails? I was going to ask my SA, but he just started working at the dealership and I am not even sure he would know (or be willing to tell me)...

There are basically two ways of cleaning fuel injectors: (1) inject a cleaner through the air intake side - which means a can of cleaner is hooked up through some vaccum line or (2) add fuel injector cleaner to the tank. I suspect taht for $150 the dealer might have added something on the air intake side. If I were you I would just go to Autozone, grab a good fuel injector cleaner, dump in the tank and see if performance increases. I would also drive the car at a higher RPM for a bit. As for cleaners: Techron is great. I have also used the Lucas Oil one or Redline Fuel Injector cleaner.

Only if this does not work would I take it in

Some people used to pipe the cleaner right through the fuel rail schraeder but with the N54... scary!

So after reading this, it makes me want to go out and get this and start using it every 3K miles, or would that not be all that necessary? Are there people out there using something like this on a regular basis?

Yes... me. You can buy them in bulk at Costco... cheaper. The product is called Pro-Gard. Paid $16 for carton of 6, 20 fl. oz. bottles.

If the car was running smooth but sluggish I would doubt it was the fuel injectors. Most likely one or two injectors would be operating improperly but not all and not with exactly the same amount of dirt. I would have checked the air filter first. A dirty air filter will not increas emissions or make thee car run rough or uneven. It would limit the airflow and, therefore, the amount of fuel injected into the engine.

It was stated that the car seemed to run better after the fuel injector service. Heck, most cars seem to run better after you wash them.

Got some of the Cheveron Pro-Gard Fuel Injector Cleaner (20oz. bottle) this morning. Will use on the next fill up and looking forward to some nice maintaince with this stuff. Thanks for the tip, Nube1.
