Question Replacement Gauges on 325ci????

I've got a '01 325ci and I just ordered some white-out, reverse glow gauges for my dash. I took them to a local install place, and they said they were worried about tearing the gauge faces off, since it sends an error message to the computer. He said he knew it was a problem with the 5's, but he wasn't sure about the 3's. Anyway, I was just curious if anybody else has had this mod successfully installed, and some details about it?? My friend used to have a four door e46 and he had some gauges put in, but he was warning me about resetting the needles exactly and all this other crap. He said he could probably do it, and mount the relay color/dimmer selector in the little flip compartment below the stereo, so it would be clean. Long story short, it's got me really wondering if I want to tear all my gauges out, but they sure do look bad-ass! Any suggestions?

P.S.- The jackass said it would be $150 in labor, so I'm probably going somewhere else anyway if I do get them done.
