Which to Buy? M6 or 63, 5CSi?

I live on the east coast, most of the nicer M6s seem to be on the west coast. My budget is under $20K so I am about to pull the trigger on a very nice 635CSi that has a lot of nice mods, very nice paint and interior. It started out as a Canadian car, was converted to US specs and has been in CA and OR for over 20 years. It is an '88 model, 5 speed manual, SLS has been removed and replaced with Eibach springs and Bilsteins, has a Conforti chip, 17" BMW basketweave wheels, new F1 Goodyear tires, under 100K miles, full maintenance history. Owner says with the chip and lower rear end gears, it is just about as quick as an M6 up to about 100 mph. I'm a 62 yr. old guy wanting a nice car for weekends, club events and cruising with my wife of 41 years. Have never owned an M car so won't really have anything to miss or will I? Any advice?

Is the "6 speed manual" a typo?/ OR?? Better off with the 635 as maintenance will be more reasonable and less intense

Sorry, it was a type. It is a 5 speed manual with no huge cooler in the rear seats. It has been slightly modded with nice basketweave wheels, Dinan chip, anti-sway bars, Euro differential (slightly lower gearing). Will post more pics as soon as it is delivered. Black/tan leather interior. Thought I wanted an M6 but have heard from too many folks who are spending thousands on maintenance and repairs. I'll be happy with the 635.

635csi is a great choice. For the same reason, I have stuck to non-///M 6-Series myself. However, never say never, if the right one came along, I will gladly trade up and hunt her down

The pics look great. The 6-Speed is not a factory option for the E24s, that is why some thought it maybe a typo. The 635csi that you are looking at probably was a automatic car that had a manual transplant. Still lots of fun. Share your VIN (last seven) and we can find out the true specs of how the car came out of the factory. Good luck and enjoy. Welcome to the Madness!

I decoded the VIN: 0608467, and it is an original 5 speed manual car.

Respectfully suggest you bone up on 635 specs so a seller doesn't lead you astray. If not careful, you can be badly burned.

Please explain. The VIN shows it be a manual tranny. Carfax is clean. I had a certified BMW mechanic check it out and he confirmed the car is a nice one. I'll know in a couple weeks when it is delivered but I feel good about the purchase.

Am I correct that this is a US spec 5 speed manual car? Last 7 digits of the VIN are: 0608467. Thanks.

Chassis number- 0608467
Vehicle code- 5374
Series- E24
Model- 635CSi
Body type- coupe
Catalog model- USA
Production date- 1987 / 12
Engine- M30

Looks like you may have a rare and desirable late model ('88-'89) 5-speed E24. You might want to ask the owner if the car is indeed a 5-speed. Just to make sure. If he clearly discloses that the car is a 6-speed…then

Don't forget to share lots and lots of pics

I though the 280 5 speed Getrag gear box was used only in the M6 cars?? If this is correct, the car has a close ratio OD gear box.

Yes, the previous owner assured me it is indeed a rare 5 speed '88 model. I will attach a few pics of the car being loaded onto the transporter.

Yes, I meant to say 5 speed manual. Sorry, for all the confusion. I have a 6 speed manual in my Z4.
