One Week in and really lovin my new Coupe

I wanted to give a one week update. I did not take any more pics, but if someone wants a particular view or has a question I am glad to answer it. I have a road trip planned in a couple of weeks and will report on how she handles on the road.

Some first week thoughts/impressions/comments:

- First I am turning a lot of heads. Especially when I accelerate downtown. Not only do they see it, but they hear it.

- As to the above, even with the windows closed you can hear the exhaust note. The designers got this right. It looks...and sounds awesome.

- I had two friends in it. One owned a 2008 335i, but now a 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo Vert. The other is a die hard Audi guy. I know the Porsche guy loved his 335, but is a real car guy who always wanted a Porsche. I know he was thinking of the 650. His comment was that this was the best blend of style, performance and technology, and that while he loves his 911, that maybe he should have waited and got the 650. We both agreed that they are really two different cars, one a sports car and one a GT, but he was really impressed.

The Audi guy really noticed the exhaust and the interior. He thought that if you did not want a pure sports car this was a great blend. He also thought the care looked great and really took BMW back to previous generations

- I love having the power in this car, especially after my 750. Although I cant push it yet, I did cheat and go a bit above 4k RPMS for a second or two when I got near a Ferrari one morning this week. The low end torque is really great. While I never owned a Turbo before and have read a bunch on lag over the decades, it's really hard to see/feel any lag

- I love having the 4 modes of drive. I have spent a little bit of time in each, but sport+ as I mentioned above pushed the RPMs higher and I will need to stay away until after break-in.

- It is too easy to get distracted with all the Media options ;-)

- Here's what I am disappointed about***********: The iphone 4 cradle is poor and connectivity goes in and out (I am getting a new one from the dealer). I hope this will not be a constant issue. I have a a Torch and an iphone 4. The consistency of connections seems to also be an issue.

Well I have rambled on enough. Time to take my baby in for her first hand car wash.

I would second HB's review.

Now that my tint has dried, I find myself driving with the windows open a little or a lot, as the engine note, especially when it loads up from low revs is very nice. Power is impressive, but I've only got 300 miles or so, so I don't know as much as I will about the engine, but it seems to wake up about 3 grand and starts to sing, and promises to be great fun once broken in.

Comfort mode is a bit of a yawn, but Sport is just right. NAV is big, bright, easier to use than before. I still wish the screen would tilt and hide, a la Audi. The Bang & Olufsen is very nice, when it's on... The look, ergonomics and execution of the interior is impressive as it should be. I wish they'd offered matte wood, finish is a bit shiny-plasticy.

I am very glad I ordered the Mpackage, and 20 ways to adjust one's seat makes sure everyone can be comfortable. The front overhang is long and takes some getting used to in parking...the nose hangs out there a long way. Even after all the comments I am delighted the car is so much more impressive in person---I liked the photos! The car really turns heads, it was fun watching a car guy take two spins around the car from inside a restaurant, and read the badge. Too early to tell on the Dunlops, but grippy and nothing to complain about so far. Will have it in the mountains and in the wet the coming week, so will know more then. I like the LED lights very much; from the driver's perspective, the light is very bright and white. I've read some see bluish with the car coming at them--the auto bright dim is very sensitive and considerate of oncoming traffic. Ergonomics are very good in general, seats comfortable and ventilation is handy. Heads up display is now a must have; my wife loved it on her 535xi wagon.

The only options I did not purchase were the night vision, the active cruise control and the turning rear suspension. I have tried the first and second, and didn't care for them, and I want my rear suspension working hard to go up and down properly, not turn.

Faced with the purchase decision again, I would not hesitate. I am very pleased with the car so far.

Good to hear good things about your cars so far, my car is still in the production stage, its getting harder and harder to wait especially when I read your stories.

Welll coming from the convertible perspective I couldn't agree more. This car is conserably more vocal thatn all of the other N63 TTV8 varaints save perhaps the X6/X5 -5.0's. I came case close to getting an X6M - and this car is every bit as vocal. Truth be told doesn't seem much slower either I can't imagine what this car will be like after I get the DINAN software.

My last car had night vision, HUD,sideview cameras, Drivers Assistance, etc... I used HUD most of the time so that is the only option I somewhat miss. But as the guage cluster sits higher in the F12 than it does in the GT. Its more of a nice to have, than a need to have. Sideview cameras didn't use them much, Night Vision I used off and on when traveling to the Carolina's - again more of a nice to have than a need to have on this car. I have a truck with top view, intelligent cruise, auto braking, sideview cameras, lane departure, etc.. IThe aforementioned systems get used a lot more in that vehicle , so I am good with the tech options I have on the 650 with the exception of one - those LED headlights - those are a "I want to have" option LOL. I would have sprung for them without any contemplation. I should have ordered them - especially since BMW gave those of us without the LED headlights incandescent front turn signals - come on now - I mean really - we have LED fog lights but standard bulbs in our front turn signals. MY GT even had LED turn signals.

You know what, I am just harping right now. My car turns heads as well, and with the top down in sport or sport + its pure bliss.. Its a beast in its own right. I remember when I test drove it I thought it would be "quiet as a tomb" like the other "F" Series sedans - I could not have been more wrong. You can make this car bark like an an Old School American muscle car if you want...it really is a lot of fun.

I agree with the Op on the cradle. I had to exchange twice to get a working cradle.

Look closely at the tail pipes!

Ever wonder about where that beautiful noise comes from? Take a look at your exhaust pipes. There are two pipes imbedded in each exhaust opening. One has a closed flap with some sort of mechanism for opening, probably when the exhaust pressure increases under load. The other is open all the way. Noticed mine when washing the new coupe this week.

Pretty much all modern BMW's have the flap for noise control. Several 335 owners have modded their exhaust so that the flaps stay open aka the "golf tee mod". I suspect BMW makes some modifications to the mufflers to create a more aggressive sound in the 6 Series as well as the X5/X6 models with the N63 TTV8.

Well 5 more miles to go then I can floor it!!! I took my car on its first road trip to Dallas. This car is WAYYYYY too much fun. I know I will get in trouble. Even without fully depressing the pedal to the floor, the car goes from 70 to a 100 in a blink. I have my speed warning set at 90 and I kept setting it off. Whenever I wanted to lose a car, it was very easy. I had several cars trying to stay with meduring the drive...they could not. Of course there was really nothing out there of any substance except the guy in the poor E550. The drive was fun, but I did learn that if you push the turbos it cost you in fuel economy. The drive was great and all the technology was great. It was useful having my emails read to me and listening to Pandora/my iphone/my hard drive/web radio/sattellite radio, etc.

The comfort level was great and my escort came in handy a couple of times! The more I look at it, dirve it, listen to it, sit in it, play with the technology, the more I love it.

The other good news is I now have an iphone 4 cradle that works. We went through 6 at the dealer to find a winner. That was pretty disappointing, but it is fixed!!

I could not be happier with my choice.

I will probably not change my oil. I talked to my saleman yesterday and he did not see the advantage as well as the fact this is a lease.
