Stock sound system vs 335 'Premium Sound' system.
I didn't opt for the excessively priced premium system on my new E90 (anxiously awaiting re-delivery), and was wondering if anyone had the same experience and would share their thoughts on differences. I am hoping they would be similar given that this is a $72k car and should have at least a 'decent' system as standard.
95% of the time I am listening to satellite which is very poor quality, hence I didn't spring for the $1750 upgrade, but again rather hope I am not in for a significant downgrade from my current car's system... |

The HK system is better and I can clearly tell the difference. I had it in my 2010 E93 335i. Compared to my 2011 E93 M3. The base system I would say it's average for a car, and below average for a $60K+ car.
However, I have a convertible M3 - so a lot of the quality of a sound system is negated by the low amount of sound deadening material, top related movements, tire roar etc. It's like putting the best sound system in an environment that reverberates. I don't usually sit in the car to listen to the stereo, or drive in a manner to maximize sound quality (of the stereo). I can't really see the point of getting the better stereo for the price paid, in an M3. Yes in a 5er or 7er, which are much more serene - no in an M. If money or value is not a concern, just get it.

I regret not getting the upgraded audio on the M3. Had the Logic 7 on my 335i and loved it. The M sounds like crap in comparison.

I compared the base sound in the M3 to my 335i at the time - and ordered the upgraded audio for the M3. I actually prefer the coupe's Logic7 sound system (standard on the 07 E92 335i), as I think the sound stage is better in the coupe vs. sedan - but still, at the end of the day, I opted for the enhanced premium sound for the M3. That was one sacrifice for me on getting the sedan vs. coupe. Another was the interior ambient lighting (way better in the coupe).

I own both and am somewhat of an audiophile. The hk premium is noticeably better over the entire spectrum. I'll never buy another BMW without it. Good enough that aftermarket isn't necessary. They really got it right imo.
