Z4 Exactly what does resetting the maintenance countdown do?
So the Z4's (along with other models) have a maintenance countdown reminder. BMW sets them to countdown from 15,000 miles to remind us to change the oil. Most on this forum believe it should be changed more frequently and I'm in agreement. I'm currently around 7,500 and about to do an oil change myself. But my question is whether I should bother resetting the maintenance interval. If I'm going to change the oil in another 7,500 miles (give or take), should I just let the current iteration continue to countdown to zero? What other things are affected by resetting the counter? Thanks.

You will likely just mess up the interval as the service reminder usually goes like this: Oil Service - Inspection I - Oil Service - Inspection II - Oil Service....repeats. Personally, I wouldn't bother...just reset it when it expires as that is what BMW recommends anyway. For example, if you're within the 4 years free maintenance period, the dealer will NOT reset your service reminder when you bring it in for the annual low mileage oil change. The service reminder is just that...a reminder (it's just a fuel consumption countdown meter).

The reminder is not set at 15,000; the reminder is based on driving habits: easy driving, short drives long drives etc. and is recalculated to reflect that. Also, it takes into account the need for brake fluid flushed, air filter replacement etc.

so, is there a chart somewhere that gives a breakdown of what each interval means for those of us who do our own maintenance?

The interval starts at 15,525 miles (25,000 km).
How fast it counts down is dependent on the fuel used. Use more gas, the counter counts down faster than the miles driven. Use fuel VERY slowly, and the count down can go down by less than actual miles driven. There is information in the manual about what is done with each service (Oil Service, Inspection 1, and Inspection 2). Your dealer may also give you a checklist form that shows each thing done or checked for each service for your model car.

The reminder does NOT account for brake flushes. Brake fluid should be flushed at a minimum of every 2 years regardless of the reminder.

Also does not do air filter or coolant.
And the countdown is not just for oil changes, but the inspections also.
