Which one for my daily driver??? 2005 545 or 2003 M5 (or possibly 540i sport?)

i'm selling my 2010 acura tl-sh and getting something i've always wanted.. we are also seling my wife's 2010 328 and upgrading her to a 530i.. i just can't figure out which car to move on.. my gut tells me to go w/ the 545, newer less problems (i hope) seem to get good gas milage, which is nice, but not entirely a reason to buy when performance is so important to me.. i live in a small town, don't have to deal w/ a ton of traffic.. i drive quite a bit.. and get to drive a bunch of twisty back roads, which are in good condition... lots of fun.. i love the TL, but i've always wanted a 2003 m5.. but i need a really reliable relatively low maintenance car.. and the m5 doesnt' get described as such, where the 540i does more.. and so does the 545.. so i'm completely torn.. any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! thanks in advance.

The engine in the E39 M5 is the S62. It is a sweet engine but it will kill you, I mean KILL you in maintenance costs. It is UNGODLY expensive when stuff goes wrong. Which when used as a DD will happen much fatser than when used as a weekend car.

If I was dead set on an E39 body, I'd find a 540 sport pkg with an MT.

If you want an E60, I'd stay away from 04 and 05 models as they have too many teething pains from being new model years.

Thanks much...I was looking hard at the '05 545i sport...so the 550 is a less problematic sled?

Don't get an E39, they are too old by now and in their expensive intensive care phase. I had a 540 Sport with manual, sold it a year ago after replacing almost everything including massive engine rebuild ($3,500 from local friend, mostly parts costs.)
I recommend an E60, maybe a 2007 55o Sport. Not sure what your budget is. Lots of good deals to be had.

I went with a 2008 535i Sport and modded the engine management system so it puts out more power than the V8. Combined with 300 pound less weight it is very quick and agile. The sport suspension makes a big difference.
If you are happy with less performance or don't want to go that route, find a 2006-7 550 sport. $20-25k should be feasible. Moderately high miles not a problem if the car was well maintained.

I have a 04 545i sport package. I love the car but am having burning oil issues bad and not sure what to do with it at this point. Everything i have read points to a very expensive fix and at 150,000 miles i dont know if putting 5k into a car thats worth 10k at trade is worth it. plus its time for a battery and new tires. Its a shame i still owe 16k on it.

I've read your other posts. Your car is a classic case of why 15K miles between oil changes is just fine......till the car has over 100K on it. Sorry to hear of your troubles.
