Buying a 2008 CPO X3 - Need Pricing Help

Hi Everyone,
It's been a while since I've visited the forum. The last time I spent significant time here I purchased a fully loaded CPO 2007 335i and group was very helpful. I'm looking for the same type of help again...

I recently moved from California to Massachusetts and need a more snow friendly car. I am considering a Fully Loaded 2008 CPO X3 (Cold Weather, Sports Activity, Premium Packages). This car does not include Navigation. The car has 39,500 miles and the CPO warranty expires in October 2014. My plan is to purchase the extended maintenance warranty as an add on.

The car is currently listed at $30,632 (which is in the range of a relatively fair price). However, the car has been on the lot for a few months and the mileage is high.

What do you think is a fair offer for this car?

I would like to buy it for $29,000, but the salesperson is not very experienced and is not negotiating. Also, I am walking in the door with cash and don't need to trade in my other car to make the deal happen.

Please share your thoughts. I would like to make this purchase within the next 7-14 days.

Thanks!

Search this forum for recent advice regarding purchasing, tactics and how to determine fair value. I will preach once more my "don't get a burr under your saddle" message. Salesmen smell this like blood in the water to sharks.

Also, don't let them know it is a cash deal. They make money off the financing arrangement you do know. Paying cash costs them even more lost profit. And, competition is good, find another one you like. Autotrader.com

The wife purchased her 2008 CPO X3Si CPO (Cold Weather, Sports, Premium, M Packages plus HID, no nav) for $31K. It only had 24,200 miles on it. No dents, chips inside or out. Looked new. Price will vary on the location. We're in the Seattle area.

As said, do your homework and go talk to them toward the end of the month. Sales people are more apt to deal then.

All of the above. Check around some more and find a better deal. This guy senses your interest and does not want to come down. You can bet they paid about $26K for this one and are trying to make their nut on you.

I bet they paid around $23K for it....

But, not really relevant... it's worth whatever the market will bear..

If you've checked it out, and decided that $29K is fair..... then, go to the dealership.. tell him you want to make an offer, then do it.. (I'd offer a little lower... $28K, and wait for the bump)... Don't let the salesperson tell you they can't.. If he mumbles...tell him to take the offer to his manager...

I'm betting they will at least counter offer at a lower price...

regards,
kyfdx

Smile Purchase at the end of July

I just bought a 2008 X3 from Unite BMW with the M Sport, Xenon, Cold Weather, Premium Package, non-nav, 19-inch wheels, brand new Pirelli OEM tires(negotiated), and the optional M metallic blue paint(rare). Kinda wish I bought Nav but I'll suffer considering I love this rare color on my car.. Fyi, I have the classic grey interior.. I also bought the extended maintenance and the SUV was CPO. The car had 50K miles and I paid $27K, +495DF, and got a discount on the extended maintenance. I think I paid $1,450(dealer costs) as opposed to $1,895 for 2yr extension. This car books according to KBB and Edmunds in Atlanta as of today as a CPO @$34K. Private party is between $28.5K and $32.1K.

Smile

One final note, but I think that it is important. I traded an 05 G35 coupe with like 48k miles... I think book on trade was 16K for that car and they gave me 17K... I only point this out because they can give you a great price on their car but screw you royaly on your trade... I also financed through BMW @ 2.9%.... Happy wheeling and dealing!!!

You guys are great! Thanks for all of the helpful advice. I am going to make a bid at $28K, and hopefully they'll meet me at $29K. Since I'm in no rush, I can wait.

My biggest mistake was telling them that I have cash...uggh! How do I get out of that one? Do I finance it, make them feel good about it and pay it off in the first month?? I have a feeling that they may not come down now since they know I have cash (and stated that I wanted to pay cash).

dj, don't worry about paying cash. The dealer might make a few bucks more through the financing but they will never turn down cash! Next time, just play your cards closer to the vest and let them think you are financing it. Then when the deal is all set and the final price negotiated and written down, pull out the check book and tell the finance person you have decided to pay cash. That will result in lots of scurrying around and gnashing of teeth, but you will get the car at that price. As an aside, I always pay cash and pay myself back just like a car payment. Works for me and I always get to enjoy the "interest" in upgrading to a better car next time.

Thanks Uncle J - If it doesn't work out with this dealer, then I will definitely keep it closer to the vest with others.

Patrick, that's a great price you got. $27K for a 2008 CPO X3, 50K miles.

I think it's safe to say that $29K is a good deal for the same car with 33K miles. Also, the in service date is October 2008 so I have another full year of the original warranty.

I just need to figure out if I really want a Crimson Red car. it's not preferred, but the car has everything else that I want. Decision, decisions....

Whenever I buy a used car (which is always) color is the last item on my checklist. Unless I totally despise it, or would be embarrassed to be seen in it, I'll take any color as long as it has everything else I want.

The dealer is now saying they won't go lower than $30,300. Not sure that it's worth it.... Thoughts?

Reminder:
2008 CPO X3
Sports Activity Package
Premium Package
Cold Weather Package
34K miles
New tires

Sticker is $30,995

I want the car for $29,000, but the dealer won't go lower than $33,300.
It seems he could lower, but he's saying that the car cost him $30K.

Should I hold out for $29K? or give in?
The price is fair, but I obviously want it for as low as possible.

dj, a quick check of cars.com for the South Bay Area shows a ton of '08 X3's on offer ranging from $31 to $24K. These are not scarce, and if you can't get a deal go to someone else.

Thanks UnclJ. The primary issue is that a fully loaded x3 is hard to come by in the Boston area. For some strange reason there are plenty available, but not with all 3 packages.

I'm going to hold out until we get closer to end if the month. If the car is still available, then maybe they'll negotiate more.

The finance manager is being a major stickler.

I put a deposit down on a fully loaded Crimson Red X3 tonight. It has Sports, Premium, and Cold Weather package...and low mileage. Full warranty for over one year plus CPO. I pick it up after the weekend. They are going to detail it for me. CPO inspection was completed today. :-)

Works great in New England snow! I have had mine 3 years now in NH.

Congratulations! You will love it!

I took a step back wondering what happened to the $30,300. I always forget about sales tax since I live in NH.

No, not too bad at all.

They are great vehicles! So easy to work on for DIY people. Just did my AT fluid and filter today.

I wish I was a DIY fixer! If so, I could take care of my 2001 330i which needs some work. There's a reason why I get cars with the extended maintenance warranty :-)
Picking up the X3 on Tuesday. Can't wait!!
