Thinking about buying my first BMW
I am currently driving a 01 Lexus GS 300 w/ 198K on the clock. The compressor went out and from what I'm told its going to cost anywhere from $400-700 to replace it. The car itself is only worth ~2K so I'm having a hard time deciding if I should fix it, or sell it and walk away. On one of my many searches, I found an 05 530i w/ 79K miles. From the pictures, it seems to be in good shape, but one thing that I find odd is that there is a DVD entertainment system in the rear headrests for the back seat passengers. Was this a factory option? My guess is no, and if I'm right, would this be enough of a red flag to walk away? Also, based on the Carfax, I gather the car was a dealer curtsey vehicle. The first owner was a BMW dealer and it was listed as "Corporate fleet". It changed hands according to carfax 3 times, but all the service records show that work was done at the same dealer that bought it originally. Here is the LINK to the carfax report (hopefully this works). So that seems like a good sign all maintenance was completed. It is currently for sale by a 3rd party dealer, so my question is, is this worth it? Anything to look out for? I am going to take a look at it tonight & maybe take it out for a drive. What does everyone think?
Thanks! Here is a picture of the DVD system: ![]() And another of the exterior:

$5,000 too much. There's one listed by private seller in PA for $13,500, 78k miles.

According to that CarFax report, the last time that car was serviced is July 2009. Over priced, already 4 owners, not comfortable with service record. I'd walk away. You can find a better car for better price... keep searching.

Well German cars are not cheap to repair, BMW is no exception, so know going in that there is a good chance something is going to need repaired or there is going to be maintenance to deal with . Having said that have the car throughly checked by a recommended certified BMW Indy mechanic before you buy it will help save you money in the long run!

Thanks everyone for the responses and recommendations. I may still take a look at it just for grins, but it sounds like the best be is to move on. I found a nice looking 328i for sale at a BMW dealer that is CPO which I also want to take a look at.

BMW is specially picky when it comes to maintenance and it can cost pretty dollar to repair just about anything. You did hardly any repairs on Lexus during 19,000 miles ownership but no way with BMW. Lot of people pay for good look and driving fun, not worrying pocketbook.
