Replace Spark Plugs at 40K?

Just had my car in for an oil change, and they also changed the spark plugs. Seemed kind of early, my car only has 41,000 miles on it. Why such an early change, both of my other cars have 100K life plugs (both Nissans).

By the way, great service again from Center BMW in Sherman Oaks, California. If you're in the SF Valley and looking for a good place to have your BMW serviced, I highly recommend them.

Wer you charged for this service? Sparks should be good for 100,000 mi. If you were charged, service dept. should explain why they changed the sparks.

No, I was not charged. Everything was under the free maintenance. They also changed the Intake Silencer.

The BMW dealers get reimbursed from BMW for all the warranty work they do, so I'm sure they perform every service they can justify. Maybe you were on the very inside of the plugs replacement window.

While my car was under extended maintenance warranty, when I asked BMW dealer to change the spark plugs (when my car had 96K miles), they told me BMW's recommended interval for spark plugs is 100K miles; so BMW won't pay for spark plugs change until around 99K miles. I bought a set of new plugs on-line and changed them myself.

Lot of info provided by BMW dealers is misinformation (or entirely untruthful).
Same dealer told me that they MUST remove the rear window glass to replace the trim around it and in that process the glass may break. They quoted $500 for the replacement of that trim. I went to the parts counter and bought the trim for around $30, replaced it in half hour.

BMW has a new feature - we need to register every new passenger in the car. It will measure the weight of the passenger and stamp a barcode on the bottom :-) Based on the dynamically calculated weight of the passengers, certain parameters will be changed for optimum performance.

I am running a tune and was told I should replace them every 30K miles. Ordered the plugs on line and now waiting for the tool to arrive. The good thing is you didn't have to pay for them!

Does anybody have a chart showing the recommended maintenance items as a function of mileage? I looked in all of the books that came with my car and couldn't find one.....

Mine were changed at 43K under free maintenance. Was told by my SA that the plugs should be changed every 45K miles. I have a 2008 535i...not sure if it is model specific?

The N54 requires more frequent spark plug changes than most BMW engines.

It is, and the N54 TT engine requires the 45K spark plug change; others go up to 100K. It is part of the "free" 4 year maintenance plan, if you get to 45K during that period it will be covered.

BMW changed the recommended spark plug change interval to 45K for the N54 (twin turbo) engine.

I have the N54 and mine got changed a month or so ago at 43k miles and then the car started running like crap on cold mornings and actually died. Took it back in and they replaced all the injectors, runs great now. I should also mention that one of my turbos had to be replaced at about 25k miles. It had a problem with the actuator and so they had to replace it. The actuator wasn't broken but it was sticky and so the software kept disabling that turbo.
