Winter Wheels for a 2012 550xi

Just ordered a 2012 550xi (CAN'T WAIT!). Love the car, but not the idea of run flats. Since they don't last long I thought it would be worthwhile to get a spare set of wheels/tires for the winter (live in CT). Probably getting 18" Blizzaks and I'm looking for some lower cost, decent looking wheels. Found the ASA GT1s, but am being told they may not fit. Another possibility is the Ria Salerno. Anybody have any experience with either? Or any other suggestions? Trying to stay in the $150/wheel range, give or take.

Thanks,
Steve

Moda MD-11. It's a great wheel for the winter.

I picked up a set of 18" M3 replicas and that came off a 550ix M sport and they work and look great. Saved a bundle too! Michelin Alpin PA3s I recall on it. Great in the tons of rain the past two weeks. Comfier ride than the RFTs too.

I'll look into the Moda 11. Are they much different than the Moda 14? Just style or anything else.

For the M3 knockoffs, any idea where to get those or how much they cost?

Do shop around. 99.9% of the replicas are made in China. Quality maybe average (at best). FYI.

Here are some examples.

For 18" wheel, ideal would be 18* 8 et 30-35; 18 * 8.5 et 35-38

Here's what I bought from Tire Rack:

Wheels:

Snow Tires:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....20After%209/10

I couldn't be more pleased. Moda MD-11 $134 each; Michelin X-Ice $172 each. Add shipping and you are still hundreds of $$s lower than most everywhere else. If you want speed rated tires for snow and ice use, you should probably buy another tire. I didn't, and these are quiet, handle quite well, and wear great. Mine is an X-drive, but this will help RWD immensely.

OK, thank you!
What is recommended (considering quality only, look doesn't matter) - these BMW replica, or Moda like MD11?

this is what I like.

This is Made in Germany. Low pressure cast (quality is better than Gravity Cast - like most of the Made in China replica rims out there) with 5 years finish warranty. $170 per.

Yes, this is also a great choice. It's the current Tire Rack recommendation.

I have a winter set of Salernos for my 335d. I drove one winter thus far without incident, but IIRC remember someone posted last Spring that had problems with Salernos late last winter. It might just be a function of how bad the roads are in the area.

Did you go for the sensors?

I am debating on whether or not to get sensors, I don't mind if a light is illuminated, but is that the only issue???

Tire Rack just delivered a set of 245/45/18 LM-25's on 18x8 Enkei Performance EKM3's for my wifes inbound 2012 550xi w/ M Sport.

We stepped down from stock 19" to 18" for better pot hole durability.

We wanted runflats, and went with sensors because of that. The warnings were one issue, and the other issue they resolve is safety - especially with runflats, you want to know if your air is gone.

Here you go.

Medium silver paint. Not chrome-like at all which I was afraid of as the Tire Rack description read 'bright silver'.

I looked at another type for less money, but they required the use of hub rings. I'm not a fan of them.

Very nice wheels for the $ IMO

Who cares what they look like? The important thing is are they good winter tires or not.

The Dunlops are not as good in really snowy/icy condition as the Blizzaks. However, they're still very good and are better performers in cold and rain, as well as on dry pavement. And after all, in Boston (and probably elsewhere) we ride far more often on plowed roads than on real snowy ones.
