Dont own a 550, but read the article anyway. Its a comparison for some models, including the 550, that is:

"*Based on one model year; redesigned or introduced for 2011"

Not really a valid survey at all when considering purchasing any brand of new car. The point of the article eludes me.

After one model year I dont understand how seriously anyone should take the results of such a survey. Especially when given the propensity of BMW owners/enthusiasts reluctance to embrace design changes. I wonder how aesthetics and drive characteristic comparisons swayed the owners of the previous chassis years when taking that survey.

"There are also disparities within brands. Some manufacturers have very good reliability within all its models across the board, but we’ve seen that list drop from seven consistent brands last year to only two this year. Only Scion, Acura, and Mazda do not have any models that have below-average reliability. Others like BMW and Mercedes-Benz have some that score very high and others that are well below average."

The worst drive in a BMW 550 is still better than the best drive in a (insert any other make here).

No issues with my 550i so far (3,500 miles so far, including 1,300 of them in Germany).

And I completely agree with your closing statement.

According to CR, the 550i is the worst followed by the 535i. I've got the latter and voted in the CR survey this spring. I've not had any problems.

FWIW, in 1974 I used CR to select a new inexpensive car. Their pick: the FIAT 128. I bought it, and canceled my subscription a year later.

Keep in mind how they do the ratings - any problem gets a tick in the negative reliability bubble. BMWs (and Mercs and Audis) are complicated machines so they are more likely to have minor issues.

I'm not sure CR is structured to differentiate between minor annoyances and "the car left me on the side of the road".

I find CR good for appliances and TVs, but not really useful for cars.

CR has never been good at rating high end sports cars or sports sedans. My 535i X drive with sport package has been great except for tires!!

CR is not any good with TVs either - some of their picks have been ridiculous. Their expertise is probably appliances and lawn mowers

I wrote CR off years ago. Maybe decades.
They used to recommend whatever's cheapest this week. I don't know what they do now. I don't care.

I had to laugh when I just read this blog.....I bought a highly rated all in one printer/fax 16 months ago on the cr reports recommendation........a hardware problem made it unable to print. And it had to be replaced today. Wow, so much for their ratings on printers too.......

Although, here's some cannon fodder. The bottom three: Audi, Porsche, & Jaguar.

i have had 5 new benz products since 2006, and all of them have been disappointments--especially the W212 E-Class....absolute substandard quality. IMO, crappy build, quality control, and service.

i've had some bum BMW's too, but still looking back, they are better than the Benzs' i've had.

the audi's i've had weren't great either. i cross shopped audi before buying my F10, and hands down just the F10's cabin was a winner, outside of the over-all package.

however, i do like quattro--(torsen). i think it's one heck of an awd system.

As I recall, the CR's idea of a good two seater was an El Comino.

Point number one: I own a 550i bought November of 2010. Only one minor issue so far, corrected under warranty at no cost to me. The issue: a needed software update which produced a warning light. Otherwise, the car has run like a clock. Moreover, the ride and performance profile is simply out of this world. Point number two: aren't these the guys who failed the iPhone4 for a phantom antenna issue? Point number three: how much data could you have for a re-designed vehicle which has been on the market for one year?

I used to subscribe, but I cancelled about a year or two ago. Wasn't really getting the benefit. Never took their car reviews seriously. TV reviews are much better done by other places. And the reliability rankings are a mixed bag. As someone else mentioned, no matter how small the problem is, the "buckets" that they put things in to are very wide and somewhat vague. Like anything, you need to look at data from multiple sources and make the best decision based on those inputs. I don't buy German cars and hope for a perfect reliability experience.

I have a lease coming due in about a year and I very much want to acquire an F10....but looking at this forum the amount of concerns expressed about various aspects of the F10 are very discouraging. There does indeed seem to be a lot of issues and Consumer Reports might be on target. BMWs are complicated cars...but so are those built by Lexus and Infiniti. When looking as consumer comments on Edmunds about the F10, many of the concerns expressed by those on this board are again repeated. I am hoping 2012 if a better year for the F10...perhaps the "bugs" will get worked out.

fewer issues (none, other than runflats) on my 550xi than on my wife's Toyota minivan or her previous Buick Enclave. And, by the way, my wife had runflats on her Toyota as well, and they sucked too (worn out in under 20,000 miles, although no bubbles as not low profile).

CR is great when it comes to reviewing dishwashers and coffee machines. As an audiophile and photography enthusiast I always used to get a chuckle when they tried to "review" speakers or when they (still) review cameras.

I think the take-away is that there are products that simply demand subjective assessment.

Imagine them "reviewing" art....."Monet's Water Lillys rated just a bit higher than Dega's ballet dancers." Lol

What if you were a dishwasher or coffee machine enthusiast, would feel the same way?

I review my cars myself. Since 2011 I have owned 4 BMW 5ers. I am quite happy and they have been problem free except replacing a set of door seals in 2007. My 550i has been a great car. My only technical issue has been a flat tire when I picked up a screw.
