18" Wheels on F10 XDrive with Sport Package?

Another thread "Does Size Matter" got me thinking. I am one who has had 2 tire failures on a 535i Xdrive with sport package. I am thinking of having BMW replace the wheel/tires to 18" with 245/45/18 tires all weather ROF tires - the same package that comes witht he 535 Xdrive non sport package. The SA said he would have to check with BMW to ensure that the 18" combination was compatable with the suspension of the sport package, dynamic handling and roll control, braking safety and a myrid of other electronic and suspension considerations.

What do you all think? Has anyone who has made this switch experienced any issues?

For tire and wheel questions I highly recommend the tire and wheel forum by Gary from tirerack.com. Very knowledgeable and responsive.

Wow, your SA doesn't want to swap out your wheels! Despite the 8" of snow yesterday, I still haven't mounted my 18" winter wheels yet, but there are a few F10 Fester who did it last winter. I haven't heard any complaints. Going down on size will provide a softer ride and you should feel more tire flex in hards corners, well, that how it works for non-RFTs.

In Europe the sport package comes with 18 in wheels, the 19s are an up charge...so, 18s are completely fine

I used 18 inch rims and winter tires last winter. A little better ride, a little bit less handling, but really not that different than my summer tires. No problems at all.

My 535i Xdrive with sport package will be converted from 19" LS2s to 18" all weather Continental SSRs this week. i.e. the same package that is on the non-sport 535ix. I'll let you know how it works. This combination is offered as standard on the German web site, but I don't know what suspension tuning, if any, goes on when the switch is made to the 19" option.

I must say that the 19" LS2/AWD combination worked very well in the 6" of snow we had this weekend. I purposely rung it out on unplowed steep hills just to have a basis for evaluating the new setup.
