This has been beaten to death on this forum. Do some searching.

If you want to be sure, buy it from the dealer.

As Ed said, this topic has to have ten thousand threads on it.

Absolutely nothing anyone will say will add any value that you can't find in a split second simply by searching.

Having said that, I'll tell you something.

There are three kinds of people here, when it comes to oil.
1. Those who want BMW to tell them what oil to use
2. Those who want BMW to tell them what spec for what oil to use (and they'll choose the oil by spec)
3. Those who realize the BMW is just another engine and the oil that works for similar engines will work fine for them.

I've learned, after hundreds of these 'what oil' threads, that if there is someone who has to ask, then that person is in the first category, never in the second, and certainly not in the third.

Based on that logic, you are clearly in the first category, therefore, I now know EXACTLY what oil you should use.

It's this oil:

Wink what works the best for me

pretty much the last 2 replies are correct. i know what you want to hear are recomendations, so here goes. i own a 540i that i put 80 miles on, on a daily basis driving down and up very steep highways. number one i always use synthetic oil, i prefer mobil one fully synthetic oil as well as mobil gas. depending on how many miles your car has, if it seems to burn 5w-30 to quickly, switch to 10w-30 fully synthetic. my car now has more than 150k miles on it and it sounds better than a brand new vehicle. you will be more than ok as long as you use fully synthetic oil and you do your oil changes on time.
