Speed limiter on 2012 640i?

I dont have the M-Sport package. Is there a speed limiter?

All BMW's capable of such speeds have a limiter at 250 km/h, unless you have specifically ordered no limitation (only available for M-cars, not M-sport package).

Says your top speed is 130. It would be 155 with the M-performance package. Same numbers apply to the 650.

My 650 vert does not have the M-Sport package and the speed limiter capped us at about 160 mph indicated (157 actual on the handheld Garmin) when we were in Germany. We drove for 20 minutes above 150 so it wasn't a fluke; the gas gage goes down very quickly at this speed

the higher 155 mph limiter is quite useful here in States, never know when you come up on an unrestricted highway and get to flex that TwinPower muscle. Would be a shame to only be limited to 130 mph

I find it strange that they limit the cars at 130 mph without having to buy a performance package. Euro specs are different. Standard limitation here is 250 kmh (155 mph).

I can confirm that mine also makes it to nearly 160. No M-Sport package.

As with the M-Sport package, those who have the OEM 20inch Rim/Performance Tire Package in the USA have a 155 mph limiter.

I would have gladly paid the fare for M-Sport had it been available when I ordered the car!! By time I picked it up in Munich on 9/5 the option was available on the vert - oh well, next time.

The 130 mph (210 km/h) is based on the speed rating for the standard 18" all-season tires mounted on the car. In Europe you probably receive high performance summers on all cars (no crappy all-season tires offered).

That's a good and plausible reason.
There are regulations in most European countries that prohibit tires not capable of the top speed of the car.
They do make exceptions for dedicated winter tires however, for safety reasons. But only during the winter season

It is a 2 lane banked ramp....and remember, this is Chicago. Where a 55 mph speed limit translates to under 80 and you had better not be in the left lane. It is the Chicago way.

I'll be picking my car up in Munich on Monday. I'll let you know what my limiter is . I hope its at least 155 not 130. Thanks for the info

80 is still half of 160 mph. Do they not have friendly highway patrol officers in Chicago or patrol aircraft? You guys are very brave. Getting caught for going 160mph on a public roadway will get you nothing but time in my neck of the woods....

in U.S. and probably everywhere it is 130 for 640 and 650 with all weather tires. 155 for summer performance tires...

Haven't gone anywhere near 150, but jumping from 85 to 110 is but a tap on the pedal...

Aircraft? Absolutely not. Besides no small aircraft allowed near the city. At 80 on the edens, I have had State Troopers pass me. Neither the Chicago police nor the State Troopers patrol the expressway through the city, so unless you highspeed pass one while he happens to be on the expressway....you aren't going to see one.

And just to be clear, I don't think I have had this 650 higher than the 130's here, but I picked it up in Munich and hit the speed limiter several times, Chicago traffic isn't like anything I have seen in other US metropolitan areas. For still having a posted 55mph spped limit, it is the least enforced of any city. (I know of) I prefer a wide open express lane (concrete barrier on either side) but I see cars weaving through traffic at 130 to 140 regularly in late night traffic (Especially Friday or Saturday night going into the city).
