So I disconnected the battery and connected it back on and drove the car and it reset itself so it was driving and changing gears just fine. Then it came back on again after driving for 20 minutes this time I was driving normal. Anyone have any idea what this could be ? It's a 2001 745i

Not enough info to make suggestions. Which shiftgate/tranny set-up do you have...STEPTRONIC (PRND M/S +/-) or the PRND432 with A M tranny switch?
PRND432 w/A M tranny switch ![]() PRND M/S +/- STEPTRONIC {this is an e39...but STEPTRONIC gear shift is the same} And is the correct gear appearing in the "gear display" on the lower right side of the instrument cluster when the tranny is shifting correctly...and how about when it is not shifting correctly? "gear display" - PRND S 432 display in image below
(will vary depending on if you have STEPTRONIC or PRND432 gear shifting) ![]()

I have the PRND432 with A/M. It's on drive. On A mode . It left for now but I'm sure it might come back on. I have a tire defect display message and I'm not sure what that's exactly for. I did recently change the front left strut but it still shows the message . I start the car and it's fine no display messages but when I start driving the brake, abs, and traction light all turn on after a minute of driving

Now as far as the trans I don't think it's mechanical it could be electrical ? Or a bad sensor?

I had the same thing happen and the dealer diagnosed a bad switch for the A/M. They replaced the switch and all is well since.
