Use the remote button. If the release doesn't work its usually cause the trunk lock is set all the way. Make sure the key lock on the trunk is like this | and not turned like this _ (idk how to describe the damn thing)

Also, when I got my e39 the rubber trunk button above the license plate in the center, was pushed in keeping it from working. I took out the screws and carefully removed it. It was a little torn on the bottom so I removed the cover and flipped it the other way. It works now very well. Just make sure the car is unlocked before you press on it or you will push it too far too and have to repeat the procedure.

Ditto what BMW 3 SERIES wrote. What he said is also in the owners manual.

Make sure the trunk lock cylinder is NOT in the VALET position. The trunk can be SEPARATED from the central locking system so that items stored there can remain SECURE when using valet parking.

So make sure that the trunk lock cylinder is left in the vertical position ( | ) when you pull the key out of it. If you leave it turned in the horizontal position ( -- ) then the trunk is secured & separated from the central locking system and can only be opened manually with the key...or by using the trunk release button on the remote key. The interior trunk release button nor the central lock/unlock button inside the car will NOT work. If they did, then the trunk could never be secured when turned over to a valet...along with the use of the (gray headed) valet key.

(see SECURED SEPARATELY)

This is also explained in the owners manual under the section of the interior trunk release button...if the trunk has been "SEPARATED"...then the button will NOT work:
