The latest Automobile magazine states that contrary to "internet rumors", the new M5 will not come in AWD......

Yeah it is sad - but I would not be surprised if BMW is working on a AWD M sedan. The upcoming 6 series 4 door coupe with AWD and M trim could be a formidable competitor to the Panamera Turbo

Don't understand the big deal about this.

Put snows on it if you really want to drive it in the winter.

As soon as the "internet rumor" was dispelled, I completely lost interest in the M5. Given they had leaks of an AWD system in development for the M5, probably means they couldn't get it engineered/tested to their satisfaction. Hopefully, they'll get it right in time for the M Grand Coupe.

There won't be an AWD M Grand Coupe. I asked the M guys this at the M5 experience. They said they don't have any plans for an AWD M3, M5 or M6.

With the Active M Differential and a set of snows your good to go.

The only limiting factor that I can see would be ground clearance.

Then you get a SAV X5M or X6M for those conditions.

Top Gear likes to poke fun. However, I'd like to see Jeremy walk up that hill in leather bottomed dress shoes. The X5's tires simply are not up to that task.

And that's how internet rumors get started.

If there won't be an M6GC, then hopefully there will be an Alpina B6GCx in the future.

Well I'm happy....

That should help my resale given you can add Dinan to a 550ix and get your pseudo M5 AWD!

Why are you all so AWD oriented??
It seems so useless most of the time dragging around all the extra gear and weight.
For a nicely balanced high power BMW sedan, there seems to be almost no advantage, besides maybe some pretty small niches.

When you have 500+hp, the extra weight becomes insignificant compared to snow, wet, and dry performance advantages that an advanced AWD system offers. As a daily driver, I need my car to perform it's best under ALL conditions. If I had 300 or less horsepower, I would say AWD pretty much is an advantage in the snow only.

The lack of an AWD M5 means I won't trade in my car in year on a new M5, but instead I will keep it for a while since, IMHO, it is the ultimate driving machine.

Seems you are exactly in your sweet spot with your choice.
Respect for that, but it is a small niche.
Most AWD funfer owners will not be using the abilities of their cars.
And maybe you should try a M5 before staying with your current love.
Seems the Germans out did themselves with this RWD sedan again....

Now that's what I am talking about. The car was drifting all over the place at 30mph under what looked to be pretty good snow-road conditions. I doubt I would have any trouble keeping up in an AWD with decent all season tires. Where's the hill climb or the twisty decent? Even their launch without wheel-spin demo took a couple tries as evidenced by the packed snow behind the tire. This M5 really doesn't look much dfferent drifting in the snow than my experiences with our 335d, which for my needs doesn't cut it. As Sophisto said, I must occupy a small niche.

Competitors like Mercedes and Cadillac do not offer AWD on the E63 AMG and CTS-V, so why would Bmw?

I really love my 2001 Lexus GS steering - it's neutral as the reference model.
550xi steering is much closer to the FWD...
But, AWD provides much more traction, which is really what is needed in 99.5% situation. Lexus with 300 hp I can't really start from the turn, especially when wet. And even more especially when uphill. (And this is on Michelin PS2). Inner wheel will slip - and that's it..
BMW with 400 hp launches easily, even on those sub-par Goodyears.
So in real life power usually is not an issue, but traction is.

When RWD is needed? When you ready to sacrifice versatility and usefulness for the ultimate handling feeling. E.g. trade 80% of convenience in order to get 20% more fun.
(Well, might not be exactly the case with that electric steering, but you've got the idea )
