Attempted Unauthorized Access

I got an email from Bimmerfest today:

Dear PeteInCA,

Someone has tried to log into your account on Bimmerfest - BMW Forums with an incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 89234.157.254

All the best,
Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

I tried searching for that IP address but it seems it is not a valid IP address. I am concerned that someone would even care to try and access my account....well not really. But I am concerned if this attempt is the beginning of that person trying to hack other accounts. Any computer geeks out there that can make anything out of that IP address?

Pete

Thanks for the heads up. Occasionally someone will try to guess easy passwords for random accounts. It is nothing to worry about and I've blocked that IP address from the site now.

Thread jacking etiquette aside, I got the same email this morning from a different IP address.

Spammers be going hardcore to jack someone else's account in order to spam the message forum populace. Kudos to the Admins for having such safeguards in place

Look into CSF:

http://www.configserver.com/cp/csf.html

it's free and easy to install for most flavors on *nix you can extend it and integrate your login failure IPs to a logfile and have the lfd process (login failure daemon) monitor the the log from the application to auto firewall out the malicious bots IPs

I got the same email. The maliciousness came from IP 188.138.1.229

I haven't logged on here in years. I sold the BMW in 2013. How do I just delete my profile altogether?
