How to post shrink modify edit annotate merge upload etc pictures for posting here

This is intended to be a thread which, in time, we can refer others to, who ask ...

- How do I shrink file sizes of pictures or PDFs to fit on Bimmerfest uploads?
- How do I shrink photo dimensions to fit on a screen when viewed here?
- What resolution should I use (dots per inch) for pictures posted here?
- How do I automatically shrink a batch of pictures for posting here?
- How do I edit pictures with text and arrows pointing to important stuff?
- How do I draw circles and boxes around important stuff?
- How do I do all this for free on Windows or Linux or Mac?

Anyone can supply hints, so I'll start.

For Windows, two well-respected freeware programs do all that I need:

1. Irfanview
2. Paint.NET

Irfanview:
- It is the FASTEST-loading photo-editing program on Windows, bar none.
- It has the easiest cropping tool, bar none.
- It accepts the Windows screenshot clipboard nicely.
- It has powerful batch modes for performing operations on entire folders.
- It can shrink file size, set photo dimensions, rename, change canvas, etc.
- It is lousy for adding text, circles, boxes, & arrows.

Paint.NET:
- Not the fastest program in the lot but one of the more powerful.
- Not the easiest cropping tool (use Irfanview for that).
- It doesn't work with the Windows screenshot clipboard as nicely.
- It does not have powerful batch modes (use Irfanview for that).
- It can shrink, resize, etc. ... but again, use Irfanview for that.
- What it does nicely is adding text, circles, boxes, and arrows.

For Linux:

I don't know much about Linux ... so I'll just say ... for now ...
The Gimp is the most powerful but there are a plethora of other programs that will edit as the Gimp is lousy for drawing boxes, circles, and arrows. It's texting is just OK.

For Mac:

I don't know anything about Mac ... so I'll let others chime in ...

Not bar none. Bar Minan!

(Pronounced "Bar Me-none". Never mine what it is. You'd need to know Arameic... Arameic slang... a very funny language actually....

Well, it translates to something like "we are only mortals"... LOL .But there is no possible direct translation. Bar = "owner or have the rights of". Minan = Dead.) LOL

That's a great information Donna. Thanks! I am going to download this thing.

Someone asked today how to post a larger-than-thumbnail picture once it has been uploaded by use of the Bimmerfest forum "Manage Attachments" button.

The answer is simply to copy the URL to the uploaded photo and then press on the "Insert Image" icon to insert that URL at the appropriate spot.

You can get the URL any number of right-click ways...

See (640x480 pixel) screenshot below, by way of pictorial example.

Today we had a need to convert a password-protected PDF file into a non-password-protected PDF file (so we could edit and modify as desired).

I edit mostly on Linux nowadays but since most of you are on Windows, here's one way to instantly & legitimately remove all protections from a PDF on Windows.
  1. Download GPL Ghostscript 9.00 for 32-bit Windows (gs900w32.exe)
  2. Download GSview release v4.9 Win32 self extracting archive (gsv49w32.exe)
  3. Optional: Download ps2edit (pstoeditsetup350.exe)
  4. Run each of those installers in the order downloaded above
  5. Bring up GSView by clicking on its shortcut
  6. File->Open->protected_pdf_file.pdf
  7. File->Convert (pdfwrite, 600dpi, all pages, ok)
  8. It will ask for a file name for the new editable PDF file
  9. Wait for the task to complete
  10. Voila! An editable PDF file exactly like the original protected PDF file
At this point, you can do anything with the PDF that you want, even open it up in Adobe Acrobat (the writer, not the reader) and edit and/or save it to your heart's content.

For example, in Adobe Acrobat, you can save as JPEGs or as TEXT or RTF (MS Word) or whatever you like to save it as.

If you need to CREATE a PDF from any web page, on Windows, you can use the freeware "CutePDF" to print anything to a PDF.
- CutePDF download for Windows

Often it's useful to show a portion of a PDF page in the post, and for that, converting the PDF to a JPEG or GIF is useful.

To convert the PDF to a JPEG, you can simply save as a JPEG in the Adobe Acrobat writer (not the free reader). I'm sure there are freeware applications that convert a PDF to a JPG on Windows (I just haven't needed 'em).

On Linux, you can use the freeware ImageMagick to do the conversion:
% convert file.pdf file.jpg

(It doesn't get any simpler than that!).

How to create a bimmerfest avatar (on Windows XP)

- How to create an avatar for the bimmerfest forums

Step 0. For instant gratification, pay $9 USD (or 9 Euros, go figure)
Step 1. Or, for free, write at least 100 posts (then the avatar option will be available to you)
Step 2. Once avataring is available to you, log into bimmerfest and press on "User CP" (at the top left)
Step 3. Find a relevant image on the Internet or make your own avatar (like I did)
Note: Don't get too fancy with the picture 'cuz you're gonna ruin it in the next step.
Step 4: Shrink the image to 40KB or 120x90 pixels.
Step 5: Upload your new customized avatar to bimmerfest
Step 6: Hit the "Save Changes" button.

Today someone asked how to upload videos & audio files to Bimmerfest.
- Pinpointed Engine Noise-Now what??

I realized that we haven't explained yet how to upload either large files (such as videos of noise) and/or files that have the wrong extension (since Bimmerfest will only accept the following:
  • *.gif 500KB
  • *.jpg or *.jpeg 500KB
  • *.png 500KB
  • *.pdf 7MB
Notice that a TEXT (.txt) file or a MOVIE (.mov) or an AUDIO (.mp3) file extension is not accepted.

The 'trick' if you must, for small files, is to simply rename the file, e.g., from "noise_recording.mp3" to "noise_recording.mp3.pdf" and make sure to tell the users that when you upload it to Bimmerfest.

The other trick, especially since most movies are greater than the 7MB limit on PDF files, is to simply upload to youtube (or similar) and provide just the link here.

Yet another trick when trying to copy over an existing reference on Bimmerfest to a Youtube (or similar) video is to copy the link by grabbing it from a QUOTE action. It's hard to explain so I'll just give an actual scenario.

  1. Let's say I want to show below the noise video over here
  2. I go there and press the bottom right blue "quote" button (as if to reply to the message)
  3. In that quoted reply, Bimmerfest displays the URL to the noise video!
  4. That's the trick!
  5. Simply copy that URL and paste below (as shown here)

I was looking for a secret spot to hide work in progress links when I noticed this thread in the test forum showing how to post pictures:
- How do I attach pictures ?

I would have updated that thread but it's currently closed, so, I'll do the next best thing which is to bring the pictures over here so others can take advantage of them.

EDIT: Drat. I noticed after I hit submit that they're huge (on my tiny laptop screen). So I saved the originals to my hard disk; resized them to 640x480; and then uploaded them here for convenience of the viewer.

In reading this thread, I realized there is a "trick" for posting Youtube URLs:
- E39 (1997 - 2003) > Is 5 series so secured?

Notice this URL (with a dot between the "u" and the "b") does not display:
-

While this URL is where that prior URL actually sends you:
- http:// www . youtube . com / watch?v= kVmPfCFFkqQ&feature=youtu.be

Note: I had to add spaces to the URL; otherwise it would show up as this:
-

Youtube hint from this thread:
- E39 (1997 - 2003) > Is 5 series so secured?

Apparently if you paste the URL from the browser Navigation Toolbar into Bimmerfest, you end up with a link which Bimmerfest actually embeds the video.

However, if you hit "Share" and then check "Short URL", you get a link which is NOT embedded!

While researching front shock DIYs, I ran into this in cn90's DIY which should be appended here for others to benefit from (since they won't likely be looking for PDF programs in a shock DIY).

Quote:
I used the professional version of Adobe Acrobat 7 on cn90's DIY (I've had 4, 5, 6, and now 7 which are all just about the same actually.) This is because I wanted his links to be live inside the PDF and because cutePdf didn't preserve all the text that ran off the page for some reason. But Adobe Acrobat Pro converted the portrait pages to landscape (Adobe Acrobat will convert from portrait to landscape mode if it has to shrink the text more than some percentage, I've got that set at 70%).

I didn't need the Distiller which will convert a PostScript file to a PDF file (note any PC can print a PostScript file simply by selecting one of the default PostScript printer drivers and then checking the print-to-file box).

As stated, there are multiple PDF printer drivers that are free. CutePDF is one easiest to use but installation is slightly problematic (apparently my old version of CutePDF first prints to PostScript and then converts that to PDF automagically using a ps2pdf driver).

Other good freeware PDF printer drivers for the Windows platform are:
- PrimoPDF http://www.primopdf.com
- PDFCreator http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator
- FreePDF XP http://freepdfxp.de/fpx732.htm
- Go2PDF virtual PDF printer http://www.go2pdf.com/product.html

There are others like "PDF95" ( http://www.pdf995.com) and "EasyPDF" (http://www.pdfonline.com/easypdf) but they are onerous by having watermarks or adware annoyances so I wouldn't recommend them.

For Linux users, in addition to ps2pdf, there is:
- PDF TK & PDF TK GUI: http://www.accesspdf.com/pdftk & http://www.paehl.de/pdf/?GUI_for_PDFTK

Nowadays, lots of programs will save files as PDF, e.g., OpenOffice, I think, has an export as PDF option (http://www.openoffice.org).

The good news is there are many freeware applications out there to mess with PDF files.

For example, you can download a BMW document which might have restrictions on printing, selecting, page editing, deleting of pages - and, simply REMOVE ALL RESTRICTIONS with the freeware programs below:

GHOSTSCRIPT:
- INFO: http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/GPL/gpl861.htm
- DOWNLOAD: http://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirror...1/gs861w32.exe

GSVIEW:
- INFO: http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/get49.htm
- DOWNLOAD: http://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirror...m/gsv49w32.exe

PS2EDIT (an additional conversion program):
- INFO http://www.fam-glunz.de/pstoedit/
- DOWNLOAD http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/p...5.exe?download

Oh oh. Now you REALLY know too much about what I'm doing! ...

PS: While the professional version of Adobe Acrobat has a text editing tool, nobody in their right mind would actually write native in PDF ... well ... if they'd put monroe shocks on their E39, then, maybe they'd write native in the Adobe Acrobat Pro editor ... but I wouldn't even think of it. The good thing about the Adobe Acrobat Editor is that it can convert an entire web site to a single linked PDF.

For example, if I pointed it at www.bimmerfest.com, I could tell it how deeply to go and what trees to follow (e.g., don't jump up and don't jump off the site and go down three levels, etc.), and the ENTIRE WEB SITE would turn into a giant clickable linked PDF file. I generally print web pages flat, i.e., only 1 or 2 levels deep. You can't imagine how huuuuuuge some of these web sites get when you try to archive them to PDF. Some are ten thousand pages long!

For the record, here are suggestions made today:
- Suggestion for forum regulars to post screenshots of Ebay links as a courtesy

Quote:

SUGGESTION:
- If you post an ebay (or any other vendor) link, it's considered courteous to also post a quick screenshot.

WHY?
- Because by you posting the screenshot, others don't have to click on the link (why not spend the time to save many people their time?).
- Also because they won't have to click on the link to get the gist of what you're referencing (again, why not save 'them' time?).
NOTE: Some of these posts are one-liners which simply say "What do you think about this? [link]"
- Also because today's links are often ephemeral, it's courteous to the reader, years from now, who is using your thread after finding it in a search, to see 'what' it was that you were talking about way back when.

HOW?
- Many ways. But one of the simplest is to hit the 'print screen' button and then bring up a freeware graphics program and say "Edit -> Paste".
Note: I generally crop and resize to 640x480 but that's a detail.
- Then hit the "Manage Attachments" button to upload.
Note: I then also copy that uploaded URL so can then paste it into the message as a URL so the user doesn't have to click on the thumbnail, but again, that's a detail which you can see in the two screenshots below.
