Help Please Valvetronic Eccentric Shaft Sensor Guide Fault
My indy garage plugged in to diagnose my check engine soon indicator. He showed me the stored and active faults. Stored faults-P1006 and p1004. Active Fault: 10823 Valvetronic.
Basically I found that this is a eccentric shaft sensor reference and eccentric shaft sensor guide faults. Is this just one sensor for the shaft? Is this like an Oxygen sensor? How common is this to fail? The indy told me to bring car to the dealer for the chance of the parts and labor being under warranty. I am bringing it in tomorrow morning. What can I expect? What will the van damage be to my wallet? 60K miles no longer under original new car bmw warranty.

You are the first member out there admitting to the having this same failure. Wowza, I was not the only owner with the same issue. The dealership diagnosed the problem and then proceeded to quote a $1900 repair. The end result was drastically different from the estimate.
Please give the specs of your vehicle. Year, milage etc. etc.

I have bmw328i 2007. Mileage is about 42000. Last Friday, the service Engine soon light came on. After two days, it went off. And today it's on again. I read the warn codes. There are two errors P1014/P1017.
Googled P1017 - Valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor circuit is open or shorted - Valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor poor electrical connection - Missing reluctor on valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor - Faulty valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor My car is in pre-own certified warranty, do you know if this part is covered by certified warranty? Btw what's the final amount the dealer charged you? I want to get prepared for this repair. |

It sounds like you need the eccentric shaft sensor replaced. I think the seņor is a $400 part. But they have to take the valve cover off to access the sensor. They bill about 8 hours labor for that job. They will replace the valve cover gasket when they put it back together, so that's good.
The end result was drastically different from the estimate. I successfully lobbied for the dealer to cover the repair under a "goodwill warranty." Repair was done no charge. I purchased the car new at this dealership. My car is an 2008 with 60K.

I just had this replaced on my 2008 328i with 57k miles. I went out yesterday and the car wouldn't start and I had it towed in. Since it's certified preowned, it only cost me $50.
But the really crazy thing is that the engine is BETTER now than it's ever been - I bought the car with 7k miles and it's always run just a little rough. They could never get to the botom of it, but today after replacing the eccentric shaft sensor it's smooth as silk!! |
