First of all, virtually anything is "possible" automotive wise if you spend enough money! Secondly, why would you bother? You would wind up with a car that looked "cobbled together" with parts from different years, sort of like you took a salvage wreck and rebuilt it with what was available. Any resale premium would go right down the pipe unless you took all your old parts and reinstalled them. The nice thing of course in owning your car is that you can do most anything you want to it as long as it is legal. However you would be looking at "back of book" value at trade in time I am afraid.

well it wouldnt look cobbles together because if you look at the 2006 and 2004 there are minor differences (cosmetic ways) like the bumper...the interior i think on the 2006 had a strip of the wood trim on the passenger side...but other than that ive seen my car next to the 2006 inside and out and its not that different....so the steering wheel i think wouldnt be that bad...and the bumpers id have to do whenever i get the money....my job sucks right now...my summer job was great. but i understand where your coming from

I don't think why you couldn't. Someone here just color-matched the bumpers and it looks pretty "updated". Check about 2-3 weeks back, there are some pictures.

Regarding the steering wheel, how the 2004's look like? I have an 2005 and I always thought non-sport 2004-06 shared the same wheel.

There are more subtle differences than you think.

Such as the 2-piece front fender on the 2004's that became 1-piece for 2005 on.
(Look at the line below your 3.0i or 2.5i badge on the side.)

In the cabin, you may find that the dashboard and trim grey shade is lighter than the so-called black (charcoal) color they went to later.
(Not sure if this was changed in 2005 or mid-way thru' the 2004 model run.)
This may or may not impact your steering wheel swap - don't know.

Electronics-wise, some components were just not available to Magna Steyr on the assembly line early on.
You will likely find you don't have a Bluetooth speaker installed up above the rear view mirror, nor any Bluetooth wiring.
Fitting a 2006 steering wheel with all those things present might be straightforward,
or you might find they changed the type of electrical connectors.

I think the point is that some upgrades are certainly a good idea, especially if they are functional/useful and easy to do.
But those that are purely aesthetic should be approached with some forethought.
And with an eye on cost versus benefit.

If the motivation is just to fool the eye into making a 2004 appear to be a later year,
when you come to sell eventually, knowledgeable potential buyers may be put off.

i looked at both the 2005 and 2004 there are no real differences...the 2006 is where you see the big cosmetic differences...and i know my car doesnt have bluetooth idc about that. i just want the updated bumper look, all i was saying is that it doesnt look like they completely changed the look like they did with the 2005 bmw 3 series and the 2006 3 series, those are completely different looking, and its not about "fooling the eye" i just like the look of the newer model, and im not really planning on selling it, im gunna keep this car as long as it lasts. i just didnt have the money to buy the 2006 x3...i was just asking because these are some mods i really want to do...if not than no big deal, i saw a bmw with a whole different looking front and rear bumper i want to find out where and how much they bought it for. and i understand how a buyer might be put off, but if you think about it why would they, i would have loved to buy this car if it had these things done to it

Depending on what wheel you have in your car, you could stay within your cars OEM options and change the style of the wheel. The 3 spoke Sport wheel is a great upgrade if you vehicle does not already have it. I have them available HERE it that peaks your interest.

i know thats what i was saying just not in technical terms....but with the 2006 e83 and the 2004 e 83...the bumpers and steering wheels are different and i think it has more electronic features as well, like bluetooth etc.

We currently do not have photos of that particular product. But yes the 3 spoke sport steering wheel in that link is one of the option wheels for your X3. And yes you can change the steering wheel, you'll need to source an airbag for it. Your local dealer and forum members are a common spot to acquire air bags, due to shipping restraints we do not ship air bags at the current time.

This can be done - don't let the naysayers dissuade you. The fact is that most (not all) people do not like the look of the 2004-2005 bumpers. There are a few options - BMW made several retrofit kits (Aero I, Aero II, M package) for the 2004-2005 X3s. The cheapest option, and probably the easiest, is to find front and rear bumpers from a 2006+ model car and retrofit them yourself without the kit from BMW. You will just need to source some of the parts from a dealership or one of the many online parts vendors that are needed to mount them. Based on my research, converting a 2004-2005 X3 to the 2006-2008 M-package bumpers is around $1000 USD. Bumpers can be easily be found on eBay, craigslist, bumper retailers, or salvage parts websites.

I just retrofitted the M-Sport rear bumper on our X3. If anyone is interested, I'll post more details. The M-Sport front bumper will be next.

Where did you find the bumper and how much?

I have a pre-06 facelift X3 3.0i and recently retro-fitted an M-Sport rear bumper. This is pretty simple, but some additional parts will need to be ordered to mount it -you can see a parts diagram here:

RealOEM.com * BMW E83 X3 2.5i M REAR BUMPER TRIM

Thankfully, you do not need to change the reinforcer (also called the "bumper carrier") for the M-Sport bumper since the part is the same one used on the base 04-05 bumpers. You only need to change the reinforcer bar for the Aero kit since it is structurally different. You will still need to order some parts to install the M-Sport bumper but the list is short:

51123414406 Loading sill cover $33
51123416948 Towing eye finisher including fixing clamp $12
51123414404 Mount, bumper, rear center $29
51123418499 Support, bumper, rear (Qty 2) $3/ea
51123414407 Mount, rear bumper left corner $8
51123414408 Mount, rear bumper right corner $8

I plan to keep the original matte black "trunk lid finisher" and have it painted to match. The 2007-2010 X3s do not use the larger finisher like the 2006 model, so it should be fine. Here is what the M trunk lid finisher looks like (some may choose to retrofit this as well):

RealOEM.com * BMW E83 X3 2.5i M trunk lid cover

The install was straightforward and took less than two hours. The only thing to note is that if your M-Sport bumper does not have the lateral bumper inserts attached, you will need to transfer them from your existing bumper. The lateral inserts are not sold separately for the M-Sport bumper so hopefully they will not have been removed when you purchase your retrofit bumper. If you look at the parts diagrams below, you will see what they are (part # 9, 51123400943):

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...50&hg=51&fg=17

I purchased my M-Sport bumper on eBay. The rear bumpers seem to be the cheapest and easiest to find. They can be purchased for $300-500USD depending on condition and whether you have them repainted. I purchased this particular one for $300 and it had already been freshly repainted to factory specs by a BMW repair shop. I spent an additional $100 in parts at a BMW dealership for the OEM parts needed to mount it (see list above). In my opinion, its a fairly inexpensive upgrade that dramatically enhances the look of the 2004-2005 X3's rear black bumper. Honestly, this is not a practical upgrade for someone who parks in the city or uses their X3 to go off-roading or working on a farm since the black bumpers or more suited for that purpose. For rural and suburban drivers, it should be well suited as long as you are not faced with situations where the paint will get chipped or scratched on a regular basis.

Below is a before and after comparison photo. These photos were taken at different locations and in different light, so the color of the X3 looks much lighter on the right. Additionally, the lower red diffusor reflectors found on the 2007+ M-package have been installed. The newly painted parts have not yet been polished or waxed, so they are not yet as shiny as the rest of the X3.

eBay - they seem to be plentiful and cost around $300! Here are a few examples:

I plan to do that next - probably within the next couple of months. I've got a long road trip scheduled next month and will wait until I get back so that the new bumper doesn't get trashed after driving on the highway for a few thousand miles.

Yes, if the bumper you purchase does not include the diffusor, then you'll need it too. Here's the parts diagram:
