Autocar Claims the new 3 Series Improves over the E9X in Every Way

2012 BMW 3 Series F30 Reviews

The reviews are bound to be mixed from different media outlets and I think we should expect nothing less than that. One thing we all know is that driving a car is very subjective and you probably won't make your own mind up until you drive one.

In the mean time, we are going to need to rely on some of the major media outlets to review the car. AutoCar has a video review at the following link you may just want to take the time to watch:
http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-video/b...-video-review/

They also did a First Drive story of the 320d which the US won't be getting...but it is still worth a read if you are craving F30 reviews. The conclusion to this review is...

Quote:
Should I buy one?
If Superman drove a car, in fact, he'd probably drive a new BMW 320d. And the rest of us would be more than happy with any other member of the range. Because be in no doubt, a new world leader has arrived and it may take a while for the others to catch up.

It's the first 3 series that's styling doesn't really call for larger than 17" rims. Those Sport and Modern look stunning just as they come.

I wish they would bring the 320d to the US!

The video review is very good. The reviews out of the autocar.UK seem more tangible and real world than the reviews out of US based magazines.

This is the most positive review I have seen by far. The others are generally positive but more muted. Not that I'll likely be buying one, but I am looking forward to getting behind the wheel of one when they come stateside.

It took me about a half a minute to realize this is a British review and thus his point of it being 29k "pounds" was referring to currency, rather than weight.

In Imperial gallons which are equivalent to 1.2 US gallons so 20% higher fuel economy numbers. More like 36.7 mpg which is about 15% better than my 328i e90 on the highway.

That's still phenomenal for a car like this. Although, I've found it's very dependent on how your right foot behaves.

Why is he so impressed with the 240hp the 4 is putting out Didn't Acura already do that with the RDX?

It's odd that you would pick the RDX, of all cars you could've cited. I would say the best known examples of 2.0L turbo power are the Evo, and the STi if you include overseas market versions. Those two cars have been producing over 280HP out of 2.0T for a long long time.

Of course the gap in refinement and drivability is huge, but still.

Funny thing is, if you never told someone the new 328 was a turbo 4 and they drove it, i would be shocked if they didnt like it. 60 freaking more Lb feet of torque available at 1500rpm

The miracle of the BMW's turbos, including the 4 cylinder is that they make maximum torque right off idle, around 1200 rpm. The Subaru makes max torque around 4000 rpm, and as a result has a much more frenzied driving experience.

That's the theory.

In practice, the N20 is no more quicker than the N52N (5-60mph) and it sounds like an Honda Civic, out of place for this class of vehicles.

Your opinion only. And probably not supported by facts: no Civic has a turbo, which changes the exhaust note markedly.

Nope. Facts? I drove a X1 N20 and then a X3 N52 within minutes. No contest.

Something was clearly missing in the process of going from the N52 to N20.

Yea, its called power. The N52 is smooth, but lacks power, not even funny. I would take the N20 over N52 all day and twice on sunday. Unless performance means little to you.

I did drive a new 528i with N20, it wasn't very fast on take off, revving up beyond 4000 wasn't fun either.

But it was a heavier car, and the take off was adequate for those who are easy on the gas all the time. I just didn't feel the power.

See if it will make a big difference in the new 328i.

No it won't. The Z4 has the same weight as the X1 I drove. We are 2 to have driven the N20 and were not impressed by low punch. Did you drive one?
