Weird mk3 to mkiv nav upgrade problem

Hey there --
I recently acquired an MKIV nav for my '02 ///M. It was pulled from a wrecked '05 X5.

Went to install it in my rig, and everything connected right up as expected, but it freezes at the ==BMW== screen on the display. If I try and run an update CD, it takes it, tells me it's going to take up to 6 minutes, then when it completes and reaches the remove the CD and hit "OK" screen, it's just hung. I can push the knob all day and night and nothing happens.

If I disconnect the battery, reconnect, the nav will do the same startup process and just hang forever on the ==BMW== screen. If I try to drive the car, it runs fine, but the odometer (both the total and trip) and the speedometer do not function. Good if I don't want to accumulate milage, bad if I want to know how fast I'm going.

The radio continues the function fine, but I can't make any adjustments as the display stays hung on the startup splash screen.

Any ideas on this one? Thanks, guys!
