Lightbulb N56?

Haha well I don't know if BMW would call it the N56 but I was hoping to see a new turbo I6 for the F30 335i (or 435i?). Audi's S4 has 30 more ponies than the estimated output from F30 335i. And I know the N55 just came out but it's kinda disappointing compared to the N54.

Any rumors out there for a new engine? Im honestly contemplating in waiting a couple of years for the successor to the N55 before buying an F30. It kinda sucks that we have to Juice Box our engines to output the same amount as an S4

If you can afford an S4, why not get an M3?

You shouldn't have to get an M3. M3 rivals the RS4. S4 the 335i, A4 328i etc

Depends. A base M3 sedan on Euro Delivery is actually almost exactly the same as an S4 on ED. Reason is that with BMW you can get a LOT of money off US MSRP, while Audi don't budge from their 5% off MSRP for ED... at least that was my experience when I started negotiating (for a car I didn't buy... either of... long story)

US MSRP yes the M3 is more... but man, the M3 is so much more of a car than the S4. While I loved the S4 for it's geek value (great tech!), the M3 was definitely the better driving car.

Who knows what the next gen will bring... but to OP; why wish for a new engine? The N55 is a great engine... while in terms of output isn't a great leap forward from the N54 is still a fantastic piece of engineering.

I think between the N20 and N55 we've got great potential for the F3x for the first few years... you know an engine refresh will be along in a few years anyway

Easiest to answer by just pointing you to go read the Wiki on the ED board... http://www.bimmerfest.com/wiki/index...opean_Delivery But in short - several reasons for cheaper. And you *must* be in Munich in person to sign the paperwork in order to get ED pricing.

You have to show up personally in Munich to pick up the car and the shipping fees are included in the price.

I just did one... and while it didn't all go according to plan it was one of the best vacations I have ever taken. Highly recommended

0-60 times are the same for a 335xi and an S4. I'm guessing BMW didn't want to get the 335 power output too close to the M3 and cannibalize sales there.

Audi has acknowledged that the 335 is the competitive bar for the S4 and the RS4 is their competitor for the M3. Respective prices bear this out. They gave up trying to chase regular 3ers with the A4 when they got rid of the 3.2 engine in the A4, realizing it was too weak to compete.

The M3 gas guzzler tax kind of kills it. My S4 was like $47k and I think it's pretty loaded, but there's a bunch of other crap you can add if you feel like blowing $60k.

Personally I would be happy to keep the N55 power output, and have BMW put the 4k premium towards lighter materials. They should make the 335 faster than the 328 by making it lighter. They can't keep adding power forever. Gas is going to get significantly more expensive during the life cycle of the F30 barring any extreme changes to the course we are on.

But with the engine options they have now, I would have an extremely hard time paying the premium for an only slightly quicker 335i that is much more expensive to run.

I think the differences between the '06 and '07 e90 engine choices is important to note. When the e90 was released in '06 the upgrade was a 260hp 330i, which didn't compete with the still in production e46 M3 which had 333hp. Once the e90 M3 came out you saw the 335i with the N54 released. I am guessing the 2013 F30 will get a tuned up N55, probably similar in specs to the current 335is.
