Knocking noise in steering wheel when turning right or left.

Hi Everyone, I am a first time thread poster on bimmerfest.com and I was wondering if someone could help me pin point my similar problem.

I too, hear that knocking noise whenever I turn my steering wheel to the left or right when I am in a stationary postion or driving very slow, or hitting a small bump. I took my car to a non-certified BMW tech and he felt the problem was with the tie rods. So I replaced with the inner tie rods with new ones (purchased from BMW) and the sterring wheel is still making the noise. I am not sure that I want to spend anymore money trying to fix this noise problem. What happens if I were to leave it the way it is and just deal with the noise? Is this something that NEEDS to get fixed?

This is my second 5 series. I first had the 2005 525i which was not great on the steering.. this 2007 is a lot better and I consider it my baby.. can someone please advise on what I should do.

Thank you in advance!!!!!!

If I were you, I would've replaced BOTH inner and outer tie-rod-ends. I've always had the outer tie-rod-ends go bad first...

If tie-rod-ends are not causing the noise, control arm bushings could be the culprit.

I had this issue... The tech took apart my brake system and tightened a lubricated everything.. He also tightened up my ball joints. I will ask him tomorrow exactly what it was...

There is nothing to 'tighten-up' the ball joints. If the ball-joint was installed properly, there is no adjustment/tightening-up needed until the replacement of ball joint.

No cost fix that you can attempt before going further is to tighten your lower control arm and tension strut nut to 165NM or 122ft/lbs.

You might be thinking of me, but my car had a howling noise at slow speed when simultaneously braking and turning the steering wheel sharply. It started happening in July after the dealership replaced my front rotors and pads. They ended up re-lubricating everything and replacing my front brake pads again. It seems to have fixed it.

This person's issue sounds like something different to me.

I had a similar "knock" but it was mostly when pulling in a driveway so uneven surface. I tightened up the torx bolts for the strut tower brace and that resolved the issue. Just something you might want to check before investing in tie rods.

Got it fixed.

So I found out what needed to be replaced in order to get rid of that knocking noise - it was the steering shaft assembly. The car is all fixed and is driving very smoothly.. I feel much better now.

One mechanic told me that it was the rack and pinion and he was completely wrong.

Total cost including original bmw part # 32306780892 plus labor and tax in nyc was $548.21. It could have been a lot worst.

As Glockz said, all that was needed too fix my knock was to retighten the bolts on the strut brace and shock assembly...... as simple as that...

So is this the towers that you see with the hood up? I know those are the strut housing, but is this where you did your tightening? To what torque value?

I think he was talking about the center or cross strut brace. If you are using the new bolts P/N 51 71 7 063 831, the torque value is 27nM or 20 ft/lbs. I believe the old bolts called for 21nM or 15 ft/lbs... going on dim memory here.
