BMW Tire Insurance Cost

Hi Guys
Now that my 528 is almost here, I am eagerly looking forward to driving it off the dealer lot, hopefully next Saturday. Reading about the tire bubble issues in the 2011, 5 series I am wondering if I should take the tire insurance.
Do any of you know what is the best price one can pay for a BMW [not non-BMW tire insurance] tire insurance?
The reason for specifying BMW tire insurance is, I am buying the car from a dealer who is 200 miles away from where I live. And I have to take the car to my local dealer for service. I hear each dealer tries to sell a different non-BMW tire insurance and if you want BMW tire insurance then you have to ask for it.
Thanks in advance.

I got offered it as part of a package (protection and dent wizard). They worked it into the monthly payments. I would go for it and hopefully never have to use it. I also had the m sport package so the wheels are more expensive then the standard.

The price for BMW ins in NY went up to $1900. You may pay less outside of NY but make sure you are covered in NY. Third party ins may not have increased price for NY.

$1900 in NC, (19" sport on 550i)....I negotiated it down 50% along with extended maintenance package....bought/financed car and plan to keep it > 50k miles. Put all into financing.

FYI............I had the tire insurance on my 2009 335i/Sport....got it for $500.........went through 5 tires and 1 wheel in 3 years....***** the insurance! Low profile RFT's bubble on bridge embuttments and SMALL potholes. Some say they bubble if you look at them the wrong way.

If you're getting the stock 225/55-17 wheels not sure insurance will be worth while for you. 245/45-18 stronger case though not certain, 245/40-19 for sure unless you're planning on switching to non OE tires.

I've got news for you, Ive been getting bubbles for or 4 years. I had 2 E550's and now a 535i. All of them get bubbles. Its nit rfts only or oem's. 18 or 19 inch wheels need insurance.

When you think about it, in NY ( particularly in the city ) $1900 for wheel insurance for 5 years is not bad! Used to have a 2006 535 w/ sport and I cracked both driver side front and rear wheels on a pot hole on the Broolyn Bridge. Cost me $1400 back in 2007. I was scared to drive the car down streets I wasn't familiar with after that.

$1900 is worth it - for peace of mind IMO.

$1400 ($100 off published $1500 price) at time of sale from BMW dealer in PA. Good for 5 years. My understanding is any Authorized BMW dealer can make a claim/repair...

Do not drive the car from the dealer with 19 inch GY LS2 tires mounted.
And forget about insurance.

i have m sport 19 inch ls2.
the dealer, open road in new jersey, wanted $2,700 or $2,800 for tire and wheel protection.
he told me tires have no warranty and cannot be repaired.
i walked.
went home viewed good year cd.
good year stated tires can be repaired.
they are also warrantied in full for the first year.then pro rated for the next 5.

From my personal opinion of all the dealers i visited in NJ, I would rate Open Road JackA** number one.

Keep your bad advice over there Jack.

Get the 19' wheels pay the insurance and drive and experience the car like it was designed for. I drove a loaner with 18" wheels non sport for two weeks and its a totally different ride.

There's insurance out there thats cheaper than BMW.

So for those of you who bought the insurance, what does the fine print say.

I mean not what the dealer told you, but what does the actual contract say? It is unlimited tires and wheels for the entire duration? Or is the a limit or a clause where they can deny claim for abuse?

I am just curious as a lot fo dealers "verbally" tell you one thing when selling something yet the fine print says another.

It is kinds like the crappy paint protection they try to tell yuou. (They don't tell you in the fine print that any waxing removes it, and with routine car washes the "so called" sealant needs to be re-applied every 6 months).

the problem with the insurance is you will keep getting new tires, but they will be bad tires.
you will make numerous trips to bmw service.
they had my car for 3 days and made me make 3 trips.
first visit to confirm tire had bubble.then a visit to bring them my car, then another visit to pick my car up.
3 days and three visits, and all they ended up doing was replacing 1 damaged tire.
could have and should been done in one visit, while i waited.

good year authorized replacing all 4 tires, but bmw was gonna give me summer tires because other then the ls2 there are no all season in my size.
bmw wouldnt order and mount conventional tires, which i requested. if you ditch the run flats there are then a number of tires to choose from in my size.

next pothole i hit,i totally avoid bmw.i go to good year and deal with them and them alone.
they provided the tire warranty, not bmw,and i will hold good year to it.
im sure that at half the cost of run flats good year will be more then happy to give me 4 conventional tires.

the only concern is time.i was told good year is gonna reproduce the ls2 and it should be available in february.so it looks like a window of only a few months.
the question is will it be the same bubble sensitive ls2 or are they using this down time to tweek the construction and or composition,to a more durable tire.

Even though you you live in New York, at the price you are being quoted and the fact that the 18 inch tires do not seem to have a problem (I assume that you have 18's), I would take the risk and not purchase. That said insurance is just that, it minimizes risk to you and your risk tolerance might be different to me and iF you need to sleep well at night then pay the money.

It's a third party insurance offered by the dealership and the repair/replacement service can be rendered at any licensed facility nationwide.
