We don't have a PEP BOYS! Dang it! Techron was $14.99 a bottle last time I checked round here.

Be careful about prices for polyetheramines.

In the bestlinks is this reference, for example:
- Everything you need to know about polyetheramines (i.e., Techron)

That thread shows there are various formulations of polyetheramines, specifically designed to fill the store shelves between the low cost and the higher cost products.

So, simply saying "Techron", is almost (essentially) meaningless (and was designed to be so by the M A R K E T I N G team.

Which formulation the OP was referring to is key to understanding whether there is value in the $5 price or not.

Hi Bob,

Which formulation are you referring to?
  • "Fuel System Cleaner"
  • "Clean-up"
  • "Fuel Injector Cleaner"
  • "Fuel Injector Plus Intake Valve Cleaner"
  • "Gas Treatment"
For example, see this letter posted in the reference I previously quoted, showing (at least) five different "grades" of techron-branded polyetheramine solutions from Chevron.

The ProGard and Techron products contain the same chemical additive.
There is but one grade of the Techron product, while there are four
grades of Pro-Gard. The Pro-Gard products are "Clean-up", "Fuel Injector
Cleaner", "Fuel Injector Plus Intake Valve Cleaner", and "Gas
Treatment".

The ProGard products give lower, less effective concentrations. These
lower-concentration packages often sell for less. They have less "keep
clean" and "cleanup" properties. They are also not concentrated enough
to clean combustion chamber deposits. There are only subtle differences
amongst the Pro-Gard products, mostly having to do with concentration.

Techron Concentrate Fuel System Cleaner is the most concentrated and
will clean combustion chamber deposits. There is approximately 100% more
active ingredient in the Techron Concentrate than the Pro-Gard Fuel
Injector Cleaner. The active ingredient is Poly Ether Amine with a
solvent carrier.

A bottle of Techron Concentrate Fuel System Cleaner, when added to
gasoline according to the label instructions, results in an additive
concentration roughly 10 times stronger than the dose in Chevron
gasolines.

If you always used Chevron gasolines, you should be getting enough of a
dose of Techron such that you should not have to purchase the
Concentrate. "

Note; Shell and all other Top Tier gasolines contain Techron's active ingredient, PEA.

Thanks for looking that up!

As noted, when I called Chevron marketing to ask about the five differerent 'grades' of Techron-branded poly ether amine solutions, after repeated and pointed questions, I was finally told by a somewhat exasperated customer support technician that the four pro-guard grades are really just a marketing response to cheaper well-marketed alternatives in the marketplace.

It's all about shelf space.

But, the good news is that Bob was apparently referring to the 'real stuff', i.e., the "Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner" itself (and not the similar sounding (to some) "Clean-up", "Fuel Injector Cleaner", "Fuel Injector Plus Intake Valve Cleaner", or "Gas Treatment" - all of which have "techron" on the label).

Lucas injector cleaner is on sale at Autozone for $5 as well. The small bottle treats up to 25 gallons. I usually alternate between techron and lucas, both seem to be good products.

BTW, I read every post but Bluebee's. No offense, but it is reminiscent of Goingnuts if anyone remembers him [he was banned, claiming everything on his car is "lifetime" i.e. lifetime oil, lifetime shocks]... "If you follow all the advice, you will have a lifetime car"

Duh, I got the blue stuff for $5 thinking I'm getting the concentrated one. Good that I haven't used it yet and I'm going to the store anyway ...

Lady Bluebee seems hellbent into shoehorning all BMW problems into some E36 DIY or other. While the effort is commendable, sometimes it does indeed get on your nerves. Especially with E46-specific issues, where her dated info from the long discontinued E36 series does not quite apply. But well, it just adds color to the place.

Besides the stash of one-shot bottles of ProGard, I also have a large jug of Lucas that I use on the other cars. Haven't gotten the nerve to try it on the Bimmer, but may do so when I run out of ProGard, given that you don't report ill effects.

Thanks to Bluebee's compilations and researches I learned a lot about the maintenance.
Goingnuts had a lifetime car; Bluebee does a ton of work for other members, puts everything on a warm plate for them and starts a lot of topics that lead to answers.
Where is the reminiscence?

Everybody is more than welcome to contribute to this great resource. I took a lot of knowledge from here and I feel bad that I didn't give back too much in return. Kudos to Bluebee!!

I just bought a BMW fuel system cleaner at the dealership, which in fact is this Chevron product. I am planning to use it tomorrow, as I will be burning 20 liters of gas on the highway.

I just found that some members suggest to use it before a planned oil change as the cleaner will get past the piston rings and leak into the oil.

I just changed the oil yesterday!!!

What should I do?

I'm of the opinion if the fuel system cleaner is getting past your piston rings, you got bigger troubles than a dirty fuel system. Add it to the gas and move along.

Don't rest easy. One treatment after an oil change is ok. However, several treatments is not recommended. It will leak into your oil. If one insists on several treatments, then change the oil after the last tankful.

I will need only one treatment I guess. Does anyone know if the "BMW bottle" is the concentrate or regular version?

Thanks!
