'00 Z3 top problem

Just got a '00 Z3 and the top isn't working. No noise from the motor, and was wondering how to check to find out what the issue is. I saw something called 'jumping' on here, but I don't know how to do that, so any suggestions for me to try would be appreciated.

please do not take this as an insult, please verify you are following the instructions which include having your foot on the brake to raise or lower the top.
