E65 E66 Video on the move

This instructional video is intended for passenger viewing only, not the driver.

I bought this unit off eBay

Rear TV by default works all the time because the driver isn't in the back. This mod makes the TV/DVD play in the front when you are moving because by default it will turn the video picture off in the front only when you are moving. If you already have TV/DVD, that will already be working in the front, the device allows you to have pictures all the time.

So....

Does your car have TV now?
Does your car have DVD now? DVD changer mounts in the back of the car above the NAV unit, rear lefthand quarter.

If you don't have the factory rear screen that mounts on the centre console, I am about to list one on eBay with the matching module that mounts under the rear console, the rear iDrive controller and the matching wood trim to house the drive. I don't know what wiring you may or may not have in your car to finish the job off. It is all do-able with help from spaghetticoder.org for wiring and a bit of 'thinking' it through......

As long as all the TV/DVD modules are OEM, you can use a module to allow viewing in the front.

NOTE:
Some TV in motion modules will NOT work on newer models..

I purchased from http://www.toysinyourcar.com/acatalog/bmw_tvim_n7.html as this stated it would work (and does) in my '07.

You can get them locally, but ensure they are for your model..

YES YES YES. All E65 and E66 2002 - 2008 can use this device and get what is showing on the rear screen, on the front screen whilst driving. I use it all the time. Great for watching music DVD's even which sound way better through the L7 than the normal stereo CD's or iPOD. The one that I have recommended to you will work, that's why I did the instructional video.

Disclaimer....Remember, this is intended for the front passenger, not the driver.

Great posts guys.
What are you guys using for the "video source"?
In other words, my car has no factory dvd player, just the Navi.

Hey Tex, well I thought all 7's had at least TV. Well if you don't have TV and don't have DVD, don't despair. Adding TV and DVD Changer (goes in the boot LH side) is a retrofit that is available to put in your car. Look around salvage yards for the parts or get them new. You don't need to have a rear screen to have DVD and TV, they will work on the front screen by default, but when your car is moving the picture will go off and you will only hear the sound until you stop again.

And then if you get the device I have demonstrated here, you can watch TV or DVD all the time. I find it great for watching and listening to music DVD's. The sound quality is way higher with DVD, like 5.1 in your car.

Awesome post guys... But one question..I currently have rear entertainment and it does not play in the front at all even when I come to a complete stop. I understand it's because it's a NA E65. So with this said if I purchase this item and hook it up will it stream line what ever is on my rear screen to the front. Hence allowing me to select video and watch video?

Surely you can control/view the TV/DVD while in 'Park'?

If not, a problem exists me thinks..

Hmmmm....if you have the rear entertainment package and you reckon you can't see it on the front even when you are stopped, sounds like you have a problem. When you are stationary, have you selected the video source on your front MMI with the iDrve??? For example, if I have a rugrat in the back of my car mesmerised watching TV or a DVD with headphones on, I can listen cd's or the the iPod or radio in the front, but then if I want to see what they are watching, I then select the video source on the front MMI with my iDrive and then I can see or hear what they are watching. You control all this with the iDrive just like normal. If you are unable to select a video source in the front, then you must have a problem.
Can you explain your features available on your from MMI a bit more clearly, surely you can select TV or DVD if you have the factory rear entertainment package.

It sounds as if the NAV2TV is still the best option here in the states. And you can view while in motion.

After doing some research.. It looks to be that on the US E65 which I have, there are no controls for the rear entertainment on the main Idrive up front.(not even in park) that seems to be an option only on the EURO specs. If anyone has been able to do so with a US (NA) E65 please give me details.

I am able to do everything you just mentioned except control the video.. I can't select it. It is not an option at all... My options are fm, am, sat, tone, cd, cd changer not in that order but that's all I have displayed. When the rugrats plug in their headphones I can select my choice of audio while they watch their movie.

Us guys with the factory rear entertainment systems cannot see ANY video on the front screen even if you are in park, in fact, we dont have a "video" or "dvd" option on our front idrive system. Please correct me if I am wrong here.

OK guys you have given me a bone to chew on............it's must be a programming thing.
My menu in the front says, FM, AM, CD, CDC, AUX, TONE, VIDEO.
Now if I want to watch Video, I select VIDEO and then that shows me TV, DVD, Picture and Settings options.
If you are missing these in the front, and you have the Genuine BMW Rear Entertainment system, then either 1. It was a retrofit and it hasn't been coded to your car or 2. but I will see what I can find out.
I have never seen the TV and DVD functions NOT available in the front of a 7. Every 7 I have looked at has the TV and DVD option in the front MMI menu.
Are there any other 7 owners there state side that have the TV and DVD available on the front MMI? Please chip in to this post
