my 0.02 cents:
I wouldn't put anything in the car that would allow more dust in it. Air filters were engineered with a purpose in mind, keep the dust out of the engine; a K&N filter would definitely allow more dust into the engine. but everyone has their own opinions.
I think www.kandn.com is a good place to start if you're looking for one.

im not sure if they let in more dirt (a sig. amount) ... however ...

they do seem to end up coating your mass air flow sensor with that oil ...

i use the stock filter ...

I don't think they are worth the money or extra maintenance hassle.

FWIW - You can improve your performance by going with the K&N reusable filter. It's not the cold air intake but it's better than stock. I picked one up at www.bavauto.com.

Cool Other intake models

Interesting, I understand you can get 10-20 extra hp out of a good intake... What about thoughts on these? I like the BavAuto ones as they are cheaper, but are they a big maint hassle? ie how often replace or clean?

Air Intakes:
http://www.racdyn.com/Localized/Nort..._E46_Motor.htm
Click on Intake Components for the Sport Sound Intake Silencer. $440

This Conforti Cold air intake is cheaper, $350 any downside?
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...ID=JCINTAKEE36

http://www.bavauto.com/shop.asp has air intakes from $202 to $287... thoughts? obiously, I'd like to go with one of these cheaper solutions....

Gracias,
Charlie

No you can't. Not in the post ODB-II days.

Some group in Boston ran a dyno test of the most popular CAIs available on the market and the best result was about 6 hp gain, max.

Hm... What if I upgrade the chip too? I have a great local shop that is working on burning custom chips... also have those on my list...

Appreciate your thoughts!

That means that most people would probably gain more performance by losing 20 pounds than they would by going to a CAI...

I recently purchased a '93 325is and it has a K&N air filter in there. Next time I'm going to order up some parts, I'll be ordering a regular, stock air filter for it. I can easily live without the performance gain from the K&N filter (assuming there is any, for which I am skeptical) in order to have less dirt get into my engine. That's just my opinion. You'll get a lot on this topic.

I've been looking at the Dinan performance upgrades, www.dinancars.com. They have a cold air intake filter as well as engine software; they claim it won't even void your warranty. Haven't done much research yet...

One of the members here, Doeboy, has his car dyno'ed with just a Shark Injector (chip software upgrade) and Borla Exhaust and he got pretty good result. Off the top of my head I think he got like 15HP improvement with the two modifications combined.

Your results MAY and will vary.
