flat-bottomed steering

Why do the newer cars have a flat bottomed steering? Is there something functional about it? The sport models from MB have it already, and the 2013 S4 will have it too. I haven't seen it in any of the pictures of the F30, though...anyone know why?

The flat bottom makes it easier to enter and exit the vehicle. Sometimes for looks and preference. There will probably be a "flat bottom" BMW performance steering wheel option for the F30 down the road.

Yeah and real race car drivers in real race cars because the steering wheels usually don't adjust that's why some race cars have removable steering wheels.

Flat bottomed wheels they make the rockin' car turn 'round...

I just hope the new electronic steering wheel is not overly assisted and numb. I like firm and round bottom anyway.
